We recently connected with Kim Typaldos and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose in becoming a mother. That experience completely transformed me into wanting to create meaning out of all the little moments I was experiencing. I need to find a way to express the love, uncertainty, excitement, frustration, joy, and the dichotomies of life that seemed to heighten after birthing 2 baby boys. Like every mother, I wanted to document their every footstep, but I wanted to do it in a beautiful and artistic way. I want to highlight these ordinary moments and make them extraordinary so that we will look for them when there is nothing miraculous happening day to day. I want to help people see the poetic beauty that is all around. I want to capture the feeling of holding your baby while they twirl their fingers through your hair. The open mouth kisses that gets slobber all around your mouth and chin. The feeling of holding baby toes in your hand. The way a father smiles when he’s hearing his child laugh from tickles. This is where my gaze will go when I’m photographing a family, this is where I’ve found my purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Kim, and I’m passionate about capturing the essence of life’s most precious moments through visual storytelling. As a visual storyteller, I specialize in documenting the beautiful journey of pregnancy, the first tender hours, and the transformative days of early parenthood. But more than just taking photographs, I aim to weave together a narrative that encapsulates the unique story of your family.
My approach is deeply personal. I invest time in getting to know you, understanding your journey, and the emotions that accompany it. By creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, I strive to create an environment where your true selves can shine through. I believe that the most authentic and heartfelt moments are captured when you feel at ease, allowing your guard to drop and your heart to open up.
During our sessions, I focus on capturing the natural beauty of your everyday moments. I want you to feel as though you’re simply going about your day, rather than posing for a photo shoot. By blending into the background and becoming a part of the scene, I aim to document the genuine interactions, emotions, and connections that make your family story truly special.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Absolutely, let’s expand on that:
Understanding the ‘why’ behind your craft is the cornerstone of standing out in a saturated field like photography. In an industry teeming with talented individuals, it’s your unique perspective and purpose that sets you apart. By delving deep into your motivations and values, you uncover the essence of your work and carve out a distinct niche for yourself. Your ‘why’ becomes your guiding light, shaping every aspect of your artistic journey and resonating with those who connect with your vision on a deeper level.
Adaptability is not just a desirable trait but a necessary skill in the ever-evolving landscape of photography. With technology constantly evolving and trends shifting, staying stagnant is simply not an option. Embracing change and continuously evolving your techniques and approaches allows you to remain relevant and innovative in a competitive industry. Flexibility and willingness to embrace new challenges ensure that you’re not just keeping up but leading the way forward.
Openness is the gateway to boundless creativity. By maintaining an open mind and heart, you invite inspiration to flow freely, infusing your work with fresh ideas and perspectives. Cultivating a mindset of receptivity allows you to tap into your creative reservoirs and push the boundaries of what’s possible. It’s about surrendering to the creative process, relinquishing control, and allowing the magic to unfold organically. In this state of openness, your work transcends the ordinary, leaving a lasting impact on those who experience it.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to start collaborating with brands. Brand story videos serve as a potent medium for brands to convey their essence, values, and unique selling propositions in a compelling and immersive manner. In today’s digital age, where attention spans are fleeting and visual content reigns supreme, these videos have become indispensable tools for brands to connect with their target audience on a deeper level.
