Meet Amir McCall

We recently connected with Amir McCall and have shared our conversation below.

Amir, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve found my purpose in life through a series of trial and error. As a teenager, I explored different creative outlets looking for the one I was drawn to the most, never scared to try new things. I was a jack of all trades, mastering photography, modeling, engineering, production, and more. I always had an interest in fashion, but not necessarily the tools or influence around me to get started. As I’m getting more familiar with the music world, my sense of fashion started to attract the attention of the rappers that frequented the studio I was working out of. They started asking me where I got my clothes, how did I pair the pieces together the way I did, etc. I was just being myself, I shop at thrift stores, this gave me the inspiration to step into the fashion scene. I went from putting my own fits together to styling for others, and curating pieces for photos shoot, visuals and more. I realized I could create my own clothing. I found my purpose by keeping my mind open to everything, and not limiting myself.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Amir McCall, born in Omaha, Nebraska, but I was raised on the south side of Atlanta. I’ve always been interested in clothes, fashion, and luxury. Growing up, I couldn’t afford the pieces I wanted the most, but it never discouraged me from educating myself about different brands, designers, and genres of fashion. I worked with what I have, and found a majority of my style thrifting. Famous Rage is a brand I curated, I specify “brand’ over a ‘clothing line’ because its so much more than just clothing. Fashion is a lifestyle, so my brand produces clothing, accessories, home decor, figurines, and more. Famous Rage is for the people, not any one target audience. My mission is for people from all walks of life and classes to see themselves in Famous Rage. ALL of my products are AFFORDABLE!! Compare my prices to any of your favorite ATL brands and see my mission. For the readers, I’ll let y’all in on a new development for the brand, Famous Rage will be collaborating with several musicians and artists in addition to our products in the near future.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful skills and mindsets I acquired while developing this business were centered on my mindset. As a new business owner I had to be prepared for ups and downs. Any business requires investment, time, and attention to detail. Famous Rage required all of the above to get off the ground. Losing is a guarantee in the beginning. Knowing exactly what I was getting myself into helped me prepare for the worst, and to adapt! Another quality that I apply to my life is business is to regulate my emotions and stress. Being your own boss, stress will come. However, stress can affect how you make decisions and the quality of your work. There is always a solution, and there is no space for fear and insecurity when you’re creating. For anyone early in this journey, I recommend pushing yourself to be consistent. Become an expert in your craft and if you’re going to do it, do it well. Creative business and burnout go hand in hand, so be kind and patient to yourself, and push to be better than yesterday, everyday. Lastly, never mix business and your personal life. Your business, of course is an extension of you, but it is an extension of your professionalism as well. Keep the two separate for the most success possible.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
An obstacle I’m navigating currently is how to make Famous Rage stand out. Nowadays, so many people are starting their own brands, and while fashion repeats itself, there are other factors at play in regards to success. Brands are competing to drop faster, come up with more unique concepts than the last, find the perfect person to wear our pieces for promo and more. As this challenges my creative process, it also inspires me to stand apart. Instead of trying to make the best version of a trend, I avoid trends and create my own. I constantly absorb information about fashion from the 60s, 70s and 89s to be an expert at this craft and overcome the challenges that come with being a designer.
