Meet Tessa Scissorhands

We were lucky to catch up with Tessa Scissorhands recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tessa, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Finding my purpose? It kinda just clicked one day. I’ve always been obsessed with colors and making things look cool, especially with hair. When I was younger, I’d mess around with my own hair, trying out all sorts of colors and cuts. It was fun, but the real magic happened when I started doing it for others.

Seeing someone’s face light up because of what I did with their hair, that’s when it hit me. It’s not just about cutting or coloring hair; it’s about making people feel awesome about themselves. That’s what I get to do every day at Technicolor Salon. We’re all about letting your true colors shine, and for me, helping someone find that confidence is the best part of my job. So yeah, that’s my purpose – making people walk out feeling better than they walked in, one haircut at a time.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hey there! I’m Tessa Scissorhands, the creative force behind Technicolor Salon. What I do? Well, I bring your hair fantasies to life. My days are filled with creating vibrant colors, bold cuts, and styles that make you feel like you’re stepping out of a magazine. The best part? It’s that awesome moment when my clients see their new look for the first time. Their smile, that spark in their eyes—that’s why I love what I do.

What sets my work apart is the personalized touch I bring to every cut and color. It’s not just about keeping up with the latest trends; it’s about crafting a look that’s as unique as you are. Whether you’re here for a subtle tweak or a complete hair makeover, I’m all about making sure you leave feeling better and more confident than when you walked in.

At Technicolor Salon, we’re all about creativity, confidence, and bringing out the best in you. It’s a place where you can truly express yourself, and I’m here to help guide that expression, one snip and color at a time.

Oh, and here’s something exciting – we’re expanding the salon! Soon, we’ll have a new space dedicated entirely to color exploration. Think of it as your personal playground for trying out all the colors you’ve ever dreamed of, with a bit of expert advice on the side.

So, if you’re looking to shake things up with your hair or just need a little refresh, come on over to Technicolor Salon. Let’s create something beautiful together!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey as Tessa Scissorhands at Technicolor Salon, the path to where I am today was paved with several key qualities and skills. If I had to narrow it down, the three most impactful would be communication, continued learning, and the ability to learn from every experience. Here’s a bit more on each and how you can develop or improve these areas in your own journey:

-Communication
Being able to effectively communicate with my clients about their desires, concerns, and visions for their hair has been crucial. It’s not just about talking; it’s about listening, truly understanding what they want, and sometimes reading between the lines. Good communication also means setting the right expectations and educating clients about what’s possible with their hair.

Advice! Practice active listening and always clarify your understanding. Whether you’re dealing with clients, colleagues, or mentors, clear communication can make or break your success. Engage in workshops or courses on communication skills if possible. Remember, it’s a two-way street; express your creative vision confidently, but also be open to feedback.

-Continued Learning
The hair industry is always evolving, with new trends, techniques, and products emerging constantly. Staying updated and continuously expanding my skill set has allowed me to keep my work fresh and innovative. This commitment to learning has been a game-changer, enabling me to meet a wide range of client requests and push the boundaries of hair artistry.

Advice: Dedicate time each week to learning something new, whether it’s a cutting technique, color theory, or even business management skills. Attend workshops, seminars, and trade shows. Follow industry leaders on social media, and don’t be afraid to reach out to them. Most importantly, practice, practice, practice. The more you do, the more you learn.

-Ability to Learn from Every Experience
Every haircut, every color, and every client interaction has been a learning opportunity. Whether a project turned out perfectly or not quite as expected, there’s always something to take away from the experience. This mindset has helped me grow and refine my craft in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Advice: Embrace every success and mistake as a chance to learn. Reflect on what went well and what could be improved after each task or project. Don’t be too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned; instead, analyze what happened and how you can prevent similar issues in the future. Building a support network of peers and mentors who can provide constructive feedback is invaluable.

To those early in their journey, my biggest piece of advice is to cultivate these three areas diligently. Be patient with yourself, and remember that growth takes time and persistence. Your passion, combined with effective communication, a commitment to learning, and the resilience to learn from every experience, will set you on a path to success.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, here’s what helps:

Take a Break: Step away for a bit, go for a walk, or change your scenery. It helps clear your mind.

Prioritize Tasks: Write down everything you need to do and prioritize based on urgency and importance.

Break Tasks Down: Divide bigger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps.

Mindfulness: Spend a few minutes on deep breathing or meditation to calm your mind.

Set Boundaries: Learn to say no. It’s important to not take on more than you can handle.

Ask for Help: Delegate tasks or reach out for support when things get too heavy.

To manage overwhelm, it’s key to recognize the signs early, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and set realistic expectations. Find what strategies work best for you and incorporate them into your routine.
