We recently connected with Caroline Voigt and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Caroline, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I’ve been entrepreneurial for as long as I remember, knowing I wanted to work for myself since my first lemonade stand- so I don’t necessarily look at it as taking a risk.
Working in creative outlets like fashion, photography, and graphic design allowed me to receive paid opportunities for my creativity. These gigs grew to regular clients, which evolved into the marketing consulting business that I own, CVPromotions. Working for clients, I am exposed to different businesses and types of customers. I was able to learn and be creative engaging my clients’ audiences.
Over time, my skills and confidence grew, and I decided to take on a customer-facing business of my own! CVPJs required all of the skills that I learned through my clients, everything from e-commerce, press, and negotiating.
I am lucky that I get to do my “hobbies for a living”. The ball doesn’t roll unless I push it! I love the lifestyle freedom that my business gives me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As you mentioned up front, my name is Caroline Voigt, I am 24 years old from Ramsey, New Jersey. I am the owner and designer of “CVPJs”. My eyes were opened to athleisure during COVID, but the market was focused on only one aesthetic. I believed I could make a more structured loungewear set.
CVPJs creates premium work from home pajamas- with collars and cuffs to make it look like you got dressed for your zoom calls. My button-down pajama shirts have flower buttons, and my elastic pants have “deep pockets for high earners”.
Most recently I launched my “CVPlains” collection, and unveiled a set of billboards across highways throughout New Jersey! It has been fun to see myself and my sister Colleen’s faces on the road during my drives! I designed CVPlains following customer demand for solid colors and thicker cotton fabrics. Of course, they still have our signature flower buttons.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It is important to be curious, and through, and open to critiques! I’m still early in my journey, I don‘t know what I don’t know. If you ask lots of questions, and make the most of experts, you’ll only look stupid once.
I have been lucky that everyone I’ve met along the way has been excited to help me, and more than willing to share their contacts, and industry knowledge. It was beneficial as well for me to be working in marketing in roles adjacent to what I do now.
When working on your own business ideas, you need to be self motivated. If you don’t fully commit to your product, your customers won’t either.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
A CVPJs customer dresses for versatility and comfort. I have been getting a lot of customer pictures of cool girls in their CVPJs with blazers and fun shoes- to work! And also lots of pictures of their sets styled going out to dinner and parties and stuff.
The cuts of my design are unisex, I do have a growing customer base of men, which is unexpected and fun. My male customers have been styling their CVPJs under sweaters and crewnecks for work from home, and on flights.
