We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Veronica Moss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Veronica below.
Hi Veronica, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my Migrant grandparents. They arrived from Mexico with hardly anything and worked very hard to make a home for their family in Washington State. They arrived in Eastern Washington to work in the fields as farmworkers and through the years all became citizens of the United States. My grandfather was able to purchase his own land including 25 acres of wine grape fields, so I grew up seeing him get up early every morning to take care of his farm and make a living. He never took a sick day or a vacation, coming from nothing, not speaking english, taking care of 7 children and never giving up on his dreams keeps me motivated to carry on his legacy and is a constant reminder to always work hard for our family.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have owned my own styling and makeup business for 15 years. As a young girl, I have always loved fashion and beauty. I have focused on helping woman feel their best but incorporating helping them feel good inside as well. As woman we all struggle with insecurites and I love getting to witness people feel better and carry themselves with pride. Wether it be with a new wordrobe or a makeover, I always feel blessed to witness each transformation.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Make a business plan and change it along with your growth! Starting out I took a lot of time practicing on friends and family and as my skills improved I was able to change my goals and plans as well.
2. Educate yourself! The beauty and fashion industry are always changing so I have always had interest in staying educated, wether it be in person classes or online I love learning new skills.
3. Network! Starting off I found it best to attend networking events and meeting people. This helped me meet a lot of clients or people that referred me to new clients. Surround your self with other artist, the fashion indusrty in Seattle is honestly not that big so you can find your core group and help eachother.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents have always been supportive of my business but I would say my grandmother is my most influential person in this business. She was an amazing seamstress so she made a lot of my clothes growing up, all of the memories of us going to the fabric stores together and getting to pick out my patterns and fabrics and then witnessing her make them still brings me so much joy to remember. She also taught me to not be ashamed of buying second hand. As a child you always want new clothes but now as an adult I have a true passion for buying thrifted items and I am so humbled by it.
