Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Theresa Meeker Pickett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Theresa, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Thank you! I appreciate that.
My work ethic really took shape when I became a mother. Parenting teaches you to be incredibly disciplined with your time, to multitask constantly, and to follow through, no matter how tired you are. There’s no option to quit when someone else is counting on you, and that mindset carries over into how I approach my work.
Being a mom also pushed me to model the values I want my kids to see, like dedication, follow-through, and the importance of doing your best even when no one is watching. That sense of responsibility and consistency fuels how I show up professionally, whether I’m writing, consulting, or collaborating with a team.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Of course, thank you for the thoughtful lead-in!
I’m a marketing and public relations professional who helps brands and destinations tell their story with impact. With a strong foundation in writing — I’ve contributed to outlets like HuffPost, We Are Teachers, and Baltimore Child — I also bring a passion for external communications, media relations, and strategic networking. Over the years, I’ve built a trusted network of writers and editors to help land impactful pitches and amplify visibility.
During the pandemic, I pivoted from my role as a full-time classroom teacher to designing and teaching my own curriculum to over 600 students. I created an original workbook, video series, and supplemental materials, all focused on effective communication. That experience solidified my ability to think creatively and lead independently.
Following that, I transitioned into an in-house role at a local destination, where I managed advertising and marketing strategy, oversaw the production of the Visitor’s Guide, and led initiatives to boost tourism engagement through clear, measurable storytelling.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Great question! If I had to narrow it down, I’d say the three most important qualities to develop are:
1. Adaptability.
Whether it’s a shifting market, a new platform, or an unexpected challenge, the ability to pivot quickly and thoughtfully sets you apart. So much of success, especially in communications, comes down to how well you can adjust and stay relevant.
2. Clarity in communication.
Whether you’re writing an article, pitching a story, or crafting a campaign, clear communication is everything. It builds trust, moves ideas forward, and keeps teams and audiences aligned.
3. Initiative.
Having the drive to take action, especially without being asked, is incredibly valuable. Whether you’re launching a new idea, solving a problem, or learning a new skill, being proactive helps you stand out and create opportunities for growth.
These qualities not only open doors, they help you keep them open.
