Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bin Bin Kuo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Bin Bin with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I’m currently an actor based in America. During my seven years as an actor in Taiwan, I had the invaluable opportunity to work alongside many brilliant and experienced actors in film, television, and theater. Witnessing their dedication first-hand shaped my work ethic. They were not only always punctual but also well-prepared on set, with a variety of acting options ready to explore with the director. As their scene partner, I was motivated to match their level of professionalism, meticulously preparing for each shoot just as they did. I remember working with the renowned Taiwanese actor, Pao-Ming Ku, who always showed great respect for his fellow actors and the filming crew. From him, I learned not only the intricacies of performance but also the core principles of a strong work ethic: punctuality, meticulous preparation, and showing respect to everyone involved. I am incredibly grateful for the chance to have collaborated with such professional and senior actors, as they instilled in me the true meaning of professionalism and work ethic.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Bin Bin Kuo, and I am an actor and host based in New York City. Having been featured in over 30 TV commercials for leading brands in Taiwan, including Google, Samsung, EVA Air, Wrigley’s Airwaves, and Lay’s, I am now focusing on building my acting career in America. What excites me most is the opportunity to explore my artistic journey alongside amazing artists from around the world. Since moving to America in 2021, I’ve collaborated with artists and actors from various countries, including the Philippines, Korea, Austria, India, Taiwan, and China.
As an actor, I am deeply passionate about observing and learning from different cultures, as well as sharing my own culture with audiences. This year, I am thrilled to perform in ‘ISLANDERS,’ a show created by the Taiwanese duo Chieh Hsiung and Yu-Wei Hsiao. This innovative project merges Western culture with Taiwanese pop culture from the 60s to 80s and features collaborations with other Taiwanese artists to celebrate our unique cultural elements. We are excited to bring this show to Manhattan in July 2024.
Additionally, I am preparing for a solo performance titled ‘The Real T-Gaysian of NYC’ on April 6th and 7th, 2024, at the HERE Arts Center in Manhattan. Inspired by my Taiwanese community and my life in New York City, this show is a personal narrative that blends my culture, background, and identity, presenting them to a diverse audience. I’m excited to continue this journey, collaborating with talented artists and sharing stories that resonate with audiences.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities stand out as the most impactful in my journey: perseverance, resilience, and genuineness. In the competitive realm of acting, where differentiation is key, these attributes have been foundational to my continued presence and pursuit of this dream. Perseverance has kept me steadfast in the face of challenges. Resilience has helped me recover from setbacks and continue moving forward, and genuineness has ensured that my work remains authentic and true to myself.
A piece of Taiwanese wisdom I hold dear is, ‘If you stand under the theater stage for a long time, it eventually becomes yours.’ This saying resonates with me deeply, embodying the essence of perseverance and belief in one’s dreams. To those at the beginning of their journey, I recommend embracing these qualities wholeheartedly. Develop perseverance by setting clear goals and committing to them, regardless of the obstacles. Cultivate resilience by viewing failures as opportunities to learn and grow. And maintain genuineness by staying true to your values and beliefs, letting them guide your actions and interactions. I hope to share these three qualities with others who, like me, are chasing their dreams, so we can pursue our aspirations together.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, my go-to remedy is karaoke. For me, singing emerges as the most effective way to unwind and destress. Choosing a song and singing my heart out helps me pour out all the pent-up stress, clearing the mental clutter. Sometimes, I even find solace in singing while taking a hot shower, humorously considering myself a ‘bathroom singer’ in addition to being an actor.
