We recently connected with Mary Hubbard and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Mary with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My Mom and Dad instilled work ethic in me when I was super young. They were small business owners and their bussiness was right next to our house. My parents worked everyday but sunday and I was right next to them helping them out whether I liked it or not since age 10. My dad was also my softball coach growing up and he practiced with us everyday and though I resented it at the time, I now realize it instilled amazing work ethic in me. I was homeschooled from 9th -11th grade to personally assist my Dad in his photography studio, school work was secondary to helping my dad. Work was always the priority growing up and then it became my life as a means to survive. I find that throughout my experience I never felt entitled to anything and my peers that felt entitled, usually lacked work ethic too.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an Independent hairstylist in NYC specializing in blonde and extension transformations and building my brand BlondingNYC.
I believe all my clients are queens and I treat them as such with kind detailed communication and collaboration throughout the whole appointment. New clients receive a “blonde care package” with a detailed list of tips on how to take care or your hair, customized product recommendations, and a mask sample.
For a passion project I am currently working on getting my kundalini teacher training and life coach certification because I am also passionate about kundalini yoga and helping and inspiring others to combat the inner critic and grow. I hold monthly creative mastermind meets ups in the lower east side for Artist entrepreneurs because I love bringing like minded motivated people together: This is a monthly accountability meeting where we talk about our individual projects and discuss any wins and struggles and get feedback from other entrepreneurs in the group. There will also be time for unorthodox creative stimulation and expression. This group is ultimately to build and connect a network of positive like minded hard working creatives to help motivate each other and push each other to the next chapters of success. My group consists of entrepreneurs in the beauty industry in NYC but all entrepreneurs are welcome.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resillience- doing hard things even though I dont want to. Hard things like cold showers, kundalini yoga, bridge runs, breathwork. Doing atleast one hard thing everyday to keep building that resillience.
Emotional intelligence- this has helped me gauge people and situations to see if they are right for me or not. Gaining emotional intelligence takes curiosity and listening skills. Observe others body language and tonal shifting throughout interactions and see if it matches up to what they are saying.
Optimism- being an optimist has always worked out in my favor. Being the positive one always looking for a solution will hypnotize people into following you. For the weak need a strong leader and I believe optimism comes off as strength. Improving optimism can be hard in a world full of complainers but it helps if you keep your mind focused on solutions.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I do a breathing technique called breathe of fire through my nose for 30-60 seconds. I dont care where I am or how crazy I may come off. It is a very helpful nervous system regulation technique and helps eliminate stress and tension. I use this breathe as a tool to gain back control and reengergize.
