Meet Katrina Carter

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katrina Carter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Katrina, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
In the heart of adversity, where shadows loom large and the past is a relentless echo, one woman’s journey stands as a beacon of resilience and transformation. Having navigated the harrowing paths of abandonment, molestation, and domestic violence, she confronted not just the external world’s brutality but the internal chasms of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. This syndrome, a psychological pattern where an individual doubts their accomplishments and fears being exposed as a “fraud,” was an invisible chain that tethered her to her past traumas, convincing her that she was unworthy of any success or happiness she might achieve. That woman is me!!!

My initial steps toward overcoming imposter syndrome were small but profound, I began with recognizing and naming my experiences, acknowledging my deep-seated feelings of unworthiness as byproducts of trauma rather than truths about my character or capabilities. Now, this was not easy at all!!! it was a journey facilitated by therapy, that helped me navigate the complexities of my emotions and experiences. Therapy offered her tools to dismantle the imposter syndrome’s foundation, allowing me to see that the feelings of fraudulence were not reflections of true self but rather echoes of the voices of those who had harmed me, beginning with the abandonment from my mom at 4 years old.

Empowerment came through reclaiming my power and taking the narrative of my story back. I started to share my story, at first with trusted friends and then with wider circles, finding strength in vulnerability and connection. Each act of sharing was a step toward diluting the power that imposter syndrome had over me and that SHIT, felt amazing!! I realized that my voice could not only articulate my own pain but also resonate with the experiences of others, creating a collective acknowledgment of strength in survival. This shared resilience became a crucial component in my journey, transforming the solitary fight into a shared battle against the shadows of doubt.

Moreover, immersed myselfi n activities and communities that nurtured a sense of belonging and competence. Whether through creative expressions like writing and painting, or in professional environments where skills and contributions were valued and affirmed, I built a new framework for my identity. Each accomplishment, no matter how small, was celebrated as a triumph over the voices that once sought to diminish my worth.

Today, I stands not just as a survivor, but as a thriving testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome. The woman who once saw herself through the distorted lens of imposter syndrome now recognizes strength, resilience, and worth. My journey is a reminder that overcoming imposter syndrome is not just about silencing the inner critic, but about changing the narrative, reclaiming power, and finding a sense of belonging within oneself and amongst others. I embodies the profound truth that our past does not define us; rather, it is the courage with which we face our battles and the compassion with which we heal that truly shapes our identity.

My motto for my non-profit is, “Healing is a process that takes reliving what has hurt you in order to walk in your purpose.” I did just that and overcame imposter syndrome.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Katrina, not only a survivor of domestic violence but I stand in the gap for those that dont undersgtand what healing looks like. My non-profit organization, Incapable Bondage T.H.R.I.V.E. was founded because I didnt know what triggers were, what it meant to heal properly. That mindset of, what foes on in my house stays in my house.

I had the opportunity to become a world record holder for, The Most Women with Degrees posted on social media. The opportunity to place Incapable Bondage T.H.R.I.V.E. in rooms where I was able to provide the mission of the organization which is, At Incapable Bondage T.H.R.I.V.E. mental health coaching and motivational speaking, our vision is to

Business Overview
Problem:
 Limited resources and programs that address the long-term impact and effects of domestic
violence, mental health and trauma.
 Current services/programs/resources only provide support for a limited amount of time (lack of
follow up/long-term therapeutic support), which can lead to mental/emotional regression
 Unstable protective measures (the order holds no value) when the abuser has access to the
victim in the public and may disregard the protective order
 Victims often return to their abuser out of fear that they are not protected by the
system…searching for hope/protection from their abuse
 Lack of safe, non-judgmental spaces to share stories, connect with other survivors, speak out
against domestic violence and seek support/assistance
Solutions:
 Long Team Goal (Year-Three): Safehouse/haven (undisclosed, clean, healthy environment) for
domestic violence survivors to get the support that they need (holistic- mental, emotional,
spiritual, physical)
 Support Group that meets twice per month in a safe, undisclosed location where they can
connect with other trauma survivors, learn healthy coping and wellness strategies, and cultivate
their journey to healing and recovery. (photos are taken during the intake process to identify the
client, doorbell, and/or code, location changes with program progression every 90-days) *10
participants max*
 Incapable Bondage Mindfulness Journal (Affirmations, positive reflections, intentions, gratitude,
mindful exercises, thoughts/reflections)
