Meet Bella DeLain

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bella DeLain. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bella below.

Bella, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I am not sure I will ever get over impostor syndrome, though whenever I get a wave of doubt over an aspect of my life, I always take a break and tell myself that there are so many other people out there at different points in their life, career, etc., and that I am just at my point in my own journey. That usually gets my brain out of the ‘funk’ of impostor syndrome and tells me that I am on my own path, right where I am meant to be.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner and creative behind Gumball Media, a Freelance Videography and Media company. I offer event videography, brand videography, edit podcasts, and help clients create social media content and anything that may fall into the media category. I have the awesome opportunity to work with mostly small business owners who have put so much work and talent into their business, and it is a great feeling to be able to bring their visions to life in the form of video. Working with owners who are so passionate about their business is such a great experience, and seeing their joy and excitement when speaking about their goals, stories, and dreams is always my favorite part of being a videographer!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Communication, collaboration, and flexibility are three skills that have been really impactful in this journey as a business owner. Being able to understand the needs of others, and communicating the steps to make sure those needs are met is something I am constantly working on, because everyone has their own unique style and vision. Collaborating on the project to ensure those visions are seen, and being flexible to accommodate any changes is important as well!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Mental health days are huge for me! Coming out of college, I jumped right into a corporate media studio position that had long hours and quick turnaround times. While I loved every second of that job, it was hard to take a break when everything was ‘go, go, go’. When I started my own company, I made sure that I set a work/life balance for myself and kept to it. I am flexible as needed for projects, but I try to give myself a good balance. Logging off of the work Instagram account at a certain time at night always tells me it’s time to close my ‘work brain’ and take a screen break.
