Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emma Ezzell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Emma, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
The burnout can be real sometimes, even when doing things you love. Throughout my time doing social media, I try to be aware of times I’m starting to feel overwhelmed and burned out and take a bit of step back from running around the city. I love trying several new places a week but sometimes running all over the city can be exhausting and cause me not to enjoy the experience as much. I think I’ve gotten a lot better throughout the years of scaling back 50% for a few weeks to get caught up and learning to say no when necessary.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Emma Ezzell and I run the Kansas City Places (@kasnascitypalces.em) Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook Pages. I also run a number of other local social media platforms for local businesses around the city. I have been creating content since 2021 for Kansas City spots specifically. I started my pages off as a KC Eats page with tons of photos of KC’s Best Food. Through the last year, I have re-branded my page into showcasing all Kansas City businesses through photos and videos. Introducing videos/reels into my pages have been a game changer. I love being able to tell a story about a business through video and engage new audiences.
I run my social media channels on the side as I work M-F in Healthcare Tech. Doing social media and creating content has been a great creative outlet that I hope to take full time eventually. It’s been such a special experience to help struggling businesses, showcase hidden gems, meet countless numbers of business owners with their own amazing background and business history, and to share these experiences with my friends and family. I hope to keep showcasing what a gem KC is and all it has to offer as it grows.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say I’ve improved so much since starting my pages. When I go back to some of my old content and videos, I could just laugh. Through practice and trial, I have become so much more confident in my skills and much more efficient in video editing.
Three big skills I’ve learned is to network and not be afraid to reach out to local businesses to collaborate. I have met so many amazing businesses owners from just simply reaching out. Another skill I’ve learned is just how to edit and use lighting better. This has greatly impacted my video views and quality through the years. The last thing would just be staying organized and knowing when to say no.
Through saying yes and networking, I have been able try some of my go-to spots in KC like Buck Tui BBQ, Blackhole Bakery, SAUCED., KC Craft Ramen, VIVA Tacos & Tequilla, Jack Stacks BBQ, Le Fou Frog, City Barrel, Pizza Tascio, Combine KC, Brick House, Lucky Dynasty, District Biskuits, Ice Cream Bae, Waldo Thai, Meat Mitch, and so many more!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I first started this journey, I wanted to jump at every opportunity possible. Through this I started to feel myself getting overwhelmed and burned out. I think by staying organized, keeping a well detailed calendar, and being able to say no sometimes has helped me to balance everything and enjoy it at the same time.
