Meet Georgina Curtis

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Georgina Curtis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Georgina, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Grief really impacted my life in 2018 when I lost both my parents, I’d recently moved to la to pursue my lifelong dreams to work as a costume designer in la and then life hands me the most devastating news. I didn’t realize at the time how that would impact my minds’ health, it’s only now I look back that I realize how devastated I was, however somehow I was still working.
Work, in a way was my therapist. It forced me to shift my mindset to live in the moment.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello! I am a costume designer. I moved to Los Angeles in 2017. I am British/ Italian and I love travelling and different cultures. I absolutely love my job! It is my oxygen, my passion, my drive.
Since moving here I have worked on some amazing show and productions, in tv, film and live performance.
My most recent show was touring with Beyoncé on her Renaissance tour as a part of her wardrobe team, an honour is an under statement!
Giving back to my costume community and to my city is important to me. I have an activists heart and I love fighting for causes important to me and to our lives.
Recently I have been working with IATSE and the unions for motion picture to practice more sustainable efforts in film making, specific to the costume design department.

I have recently been designing sustainable film production with my costume designs which I am so happy to share. This may be viewed as a niche, currently, my hope and belief is that this kind of film making will one day be the “norm”. Film and tv production powered by wind or sunlight is very exciting to me. Creating sustainable costumes to be involved in such productions, ignites my creativity and inspires me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I lost both my parents in 2018, I had recently moved to Los Angeles. My dreams had just started to come true when suddenly I was faced with the hardest thing I’ve ever endured, losing my parents and my best friends in this World. That grief pushed me and continues to push me forward. I feel that my parents are now a part of me, and that makes me stronger.
I feel like whatever life has to serve me, I can handle it and it will make me a stronger person.
My advice to anyone struggling or feeling down on their luck is, keep fighting, stay strong and keep the dream alive! You can do anything you can imagine.
My mentor said to me “ you create your own future” this is my credo. Whatever happens, we have the ability to build our future, that is a beautiful reality and realization.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The last 12 months I beleive the Universe has been listening to me because I’ve been asking it for what I truly wish for. I’ve stopped saying “yes” to everything and stopped “going with the flow”. I’ve taken more of a hold of the reins of my life and empowered myself to make decisions to design the life I want to live. I feel very creative and inspired at this time in my life.

The older I get, the more confident and true to myself I become, I am so excited about growing old. I see it like iPhones, my version 40.0 is way more advanced than my version 21.0! I left my home town

I left my home time and a job and I moved to LA. It was a complete gamble but I have no regrets and life here has been so wonderful. I wake up every day grateful for the choices and decisions I have made. Thank you to the Universe for guiding me with its mystical ways!
