We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jade Starling a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jade , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Ever since I was born my parents have instilled loving yourself and being comfortable in your own skin. They always told me I was special and my talents were God’s gift to.me to share with the world. I’ve always felt that my contributions to the world were to lift people up and heal them with my music. They taught me never to be jealous of others and there was more than enough room for everyone to shine. My confidence comes from my Amazing parents who have always taught me that everyone is valuable but some of us were given special talents to help others get through difficult times..I’m so blessed to do what I do and if I’ve helped anyone or changed anyone’s life for the better then I’ve done my job and will continue doing so.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Jade Starling, award-winning singer, songwiriter and producer of the group Pretty Poison. We are best known for our #1 Platinum Smash Hit “Catch Me, I’m Falling “.It has been featured in many TV shows and movies, most recently the #1 Netflix series Monster:The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (Episode 4 ) the series boasts over 1 billion views so this was quite an honor for us. Our new single “Nightime”- Block & Crown and Pretty Poison-Tazmania Records is currently #1 on Musicworx North America Top 50 Chart and Top 10 Internationally. We are working on an album to be released later this year and another single release scheduled for May. I will be attending the Oscar’s on March 10th doing interviews on the red carpet. I recently attended the Grammys and did many photo ops/ interviews on the red carpet and I was featured in People Magazine, US weekly, Entertainment weekly and many other press outlets.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I was introduced to music at a very young age. I come from a family of musicians, my father played guitar , my mother played piano and sang and my brother also played guitar. My parents always encouraged me to be a musician, I played flute and violin growing up but I always wanted to be a singer. I was in church choir, theater groups and my mom entered me into talent shows and pageants. I always felt comfortable performing in front of an audience even as a small child. I was very fortunate to have an amazing family who supported my dreams. They also helped me develop my skills and talents. I told them I didn’t want to continue with flute and violin and that I wanted to be a singer and performer. They got me vocal lessons, acting lessons, dancing lessons and she made me the most beautiful costumes. As I said I was very lucky to have such a supportive family. The 3 things they taught me to work on your craft, be passionate about what you want to do and don’t take no for an answer if this is what you want to do..My advice to someone starting out on their journey is Dreams do come true so work hard and reach for the stars!!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The person who has helped me the most in my career is my songwriting partner Whey Cooler from Pretty Poison. He has always been my biggest supporter and has helped me develop as an artist and a Songwriter. He will always be honest with me especially when I’m recording in the studio. He is always the most critical of my performance but I respect his opinion and it always ends up sounding better after I do it a few times. He is an amazing musician, songwriter and producer. We have written hundreds of songs together including “Catch Me, I’m Falling” ,”Nightime” and our song “Let Freedom Ring ” was considered for a Grammy. We still keep working hard in hopes of winning a Grammy one day. I think the passion and drive we both share in creating great music will eventually get us there. We are also writing and producing young artists who we try to mentor and teach them how to reach their goals with good work ethic.. I’m so lucky to have Whey Cooler as my long life friend and partner in rhyme, together we are a force of nature.
