We caught up with the brilliant and insightful BlkBird a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
BlkBird, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I think my resilience comes from the need to create music. Giving up is not an option BECAUSE not creating music is not an option. I think if the path you are pursuing is a direct reflection of who you are and you stay connected to why you want to pursue it, you will find your resilience. It’s so easy to doubt yourself and your choices but if you remember why you love what you’re pursuing, then there is no choice but to be resilient. You just couldn’t fathom doing anything else. I always remind myself that if I give up, I definitely won’t get the outcome I want. At least if I keep trying, there is always the possibility that it will work out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a singer/songwriter based in Canada and music has been my lifeline for as long as I can remember. There are countless songs that have made me feel so deeply in so many ways and I want to contribute to that. I began singing at a very young age and have always used songwriting as an outlet. I have opened for Jeff Martin of The Tea Party, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Puddle of Mudd and more. I have also played with Ian D’Sa (Billy Talent) and Cone McCaslin (Sum 41) for Make Music Matter’s Unplugged Together concert series. I released my debut EP with Grammy Award winning producer, David Bottrill, on September 16th 2022 and will be getting back in the studio soon!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think being devoted, authentic and passionate may be the most impactful qualities. Always be yourself and stay connected to what you’re passionate about. This will keep you resilient and honest which brings you closer to your core desires. Don’t shy away from feeling deeply and make sure to embrace your sensitivity because it births raw music that people will relate to.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me and continue to do for me is believe in me. You spend enough time trying to prove to yourself that you are capable and when the people you value the most believe you are, it really helps. So encourage your friends, family and independent artists! It means the world.
