Meet Robert McCready

We recently connected with Robert McCready and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I never believe that there’s a purpose existing for humans to find. God probably knows my purpose better than I do. If I get to reflect on my life in the hereafter, I might see ways I fulfilled my purpose without even knowing it. I work a day job. I write. I walk around downtown Florence, SC. It’s what I like. It’s what I care about. It could be that purpose is whatever we’re passionate about that contributes in a positive way to other people. I hope my writing brings comfort to people.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a writer, an interviewer, a hiker, a dog person, talks on the phone, likes to read, likes to meet people, likes to have fun, likes day trips, studied with my favorite writer Natalie Goldberg (had the privilege of that), and I go to the coffee shop every week no matter what. When people read my publications or watch me interview someone on youtube, it’s because I care about the subject matter and want to have fun. I hope everyone else has fun too.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Writing in cursive for one. I loved writing when I learned how. It’s calming and meditative. Secondly, enthusiasm for living. I’m always willing to do something that I think might be fun. Thirdly, open-mindedness to how something I never considered might be fun or valuable to try. You’ve got to love your fellow humans and share their passions. It rubs off.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
If you’d asked me this 5 years ago, I don’t know what I would’ve told you. I’m reading through the Holy Bible for the first time, and it’s really good. The story is epic. It inspires all epics written today, like A Song Of Ice And Fire, which I didn’t read, but I’ve watched Game Of Thrones. Then, when you get to the New Testament, it really sparkles. I can see conflicts of today having played out in the Bible. I can see solutions by example and how to overcome obstacles. I can tell that its trying to convince me of something. Why not believe it? Even if we’re in a simulation, the Bible applies to our situation and works as a way to move through the world. Shakespeare read the Geneva Bible, which influenced his work, which influences all of the English language. The Bible explains where we came from and where we’re going.
