We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Natiya Guin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Natiya, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I believe my purpose is to utilize the art of health to support women and families globally, by putting people at the center of their physical and mental healthcare. When we feel seen, we are empowered..and when we are empowered, our confidence in ourselves and our ability to heal has no bounds.
My name (given by my parents) is Natiya. In sanskrit Nati means dancing or movement, and in Navajo Natiya translates to everything, every where at once (like the Oscar winning movie, but I came first). I do think I dance through life while experiencing all realms and possibilities, blending a love of art and science to help people heal.
I am a doctor, professor, sustainable small business owner and an advocate for ethics in healthcare. Being everything all at once, I’m a mompraneur: my most important role is as mother and I translate the deep love I have for my children and my goal to raise them in confidence and love into my businesses and work with my patients and students.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I believe that most doctors are highly rooted in science and service, but often lack a creative and entrepreneurial spirit. I am a deeply creative and forward thinking doctor mom; always looking for ways to inspire and simplify health for as many people as I can in all aspects of their lives. As a Naturopathic Doctor I treat the whole person and start with the least invasion treatments, reviewing lifestyle (sleep, movement, joy, food) and looking to nature for support before considering higher intervention cures such as medications. It is surprising how many people are on multiple medications with multiple side affects, or using home and skincare products that are toxic and putting them at risk for endocrine dysfunction, when adjustments in the foundations of health could have addressed their initial concerns.
My businesses, patient care, and instructor roles combine to offer women and families a roadmap to ideal health. In my patient practice at Nourish Medical Center in San Diego I focus on treating skin conditions of all types (acne, eczema, premature aging) from the inside out (hormones, digestion, sensitivities) as well as provide the most natural yet renowned skin procedures. As a mompraneur I own a sustainable, organic, vegan skincare and wellness brand Deep Living llc. available to all ages and skintypes, and inspired by my daughter’s struggle with eczema. I also empower people to order their own labs when needed, straight from my website (helpful when your doctor won’t run the labs you’s d like run) and I offer the highest quality supplements, removing the guessing game for customers when choosing nutrition supports.
Additionally, I own Deep Living studios, the yoga and wellness photography brand I opened when I was 18 years old! Leaders such as Deepak Chopra and Desi Bartlett are in my portfolio and on the covers of books and magazines internationally. I believe health is an art, and that we all need balance in our lives. This is why I continue to share the stories of my favorite health and wellness leaders and collaborate with them on articles both in the writing and photography…sharing health success stories empowers readers everywhere and continuing this creative outlet after I became a doctor gives me balance in my life. As the sanskrit root of my name suggests, I dance between a love of art and science, so that I can best raise the confidence of my global community.
In early 2024 I spoke at a medical conference in Hawaii about advances in topical skin regenerative techniques and that talk sparked a movement of doctors to collaborate in offering scar reduction (with exosomes and microneedling) for burn victims in Maui. We are currently securing grants to offer this healing service to patients free of cost on Maui. This summer I will be speaking at a medical conference in Chicago on medical ethics including the important topics of DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion), increasing safety of home and personal care products int he USA, and also the safe use of artificial intelligence. Providing service and supporting a more ethically sound medical and wellness field for all people is my passion. I’m thrilled to be increasing my presence and passion and the presence of my colleagues; female leaders of multiple ages and cultural backgrounds globally this year.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would like to invite readers to follow their own inner compass and their bliss. When you close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine yourself in your favorite place doing what you love, what does that look like? With no opinions or expectations coming in, what does your life look like?
From the time I was a child when I closed my eyes I saw a retreat/medical type center with my mom (a renowned bodyworker) on beach that was so beautiful and set in nature. I saw people doing yoga, surfing, receiving spa treatments, and learning to cook. There is were art classes under palm trees…leaders of countries were visiting and learning how to implement prevention and wellness into early education and political institutions. It was both simple and profound. Had I been supported by the rest of my family in the vision from the time I was a child I would have been much further along my path sooner…it took me decades of overcoming negative self talk to truly start living my purpose. I was told early on by multiple family members that I couldn’t be a jack of all trades, that I had to pick one thing and stick with only that. If I was going to be a doctor, be a doctor. I was told I couldn’t have a health photo business and be a doctor. I was told I couldn’t be a mom and have a skincare business and be a doctor. I do all of these now and I’m happier and healthier than I have been in my entire adult life..but it took listening to my own voice instead of the voices of others (who meant well but they aren’t me) to get there.
I’d also like to mention that in the goal of having or doing it all, its okay not to have or do it all all at one time. I worked in a top cardiology clinic after receiving my medical degree and I barely saw my family while I gave 50-60 hours a week to paying my dues as a new doc. However, I started my skincare business slowly on the weekends and streamlined my photo business by hiring other photographers. Within 3 years I was able to see patients (working for myself), run two small businesses, and pick my kids up from school daily.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m looking for individuals, companies and angel investors who want collaborate with a passionate doctor mom in increasing the standard of ethics in wellness products and advocacy for natural medicine. Specifically, I’m looking for volunteers and grants to expedite my efforts on Maui to help reduce scars for burn victims, and I’d like to donate my healing salve to participants. With the goal of providing increased health outcomes to more communities, I’d like support in growing my skincare and wellness business Deep Living so that sustainable, ethical, organic, and vegan skincare and supplements become the “norm” in stores and clinics across the United States.
In the next year my goal is to become a board member for a national or international ethics committee dedicated to empowering all communities with safer personal care and home health products.
