Meet Kandy Robertson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kandy Robertson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kandy , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience has its roots in the harrowing experiences of my parents, who survived the Cambodian genocide in the 1970s. Their journey from being refugees to building a new life in an unfamiliar country is a testament to their strength and determination. The aftermath of such traumatic events left my parents grappling with PTSD, shaping our family dynamics in ways that were far from conventional. Growing up in an environment marked by hardship and linguistic barriers, with my parents not fluent in English and my brother being deaf, I shouldered responsibilities beyond my years. My upbringing was a juxtaposition of naivety and maturity, marked by the echoes of a past I hadn’t personally lived but felt profoundly. Living in an abusive environment, I found myself making poor choices as an adult, unknowingly attracting echoes of my tumultuous upbringing. Each obstacle felt like a battle, a personal war, akin to my own version of a genocide. Reflecting on my journey, I realize that my resilience is a legacy passed down by my parents—forged in the crucible of survival and the unwavering pursuit of a better life despite unimaginable odds.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my perspective, the three most crucial qualities or skills one can possess are perseverance, resilience, and the ability to embrace change with an open mind. Perseverance serves as the unwavering foundation that propels individuals forward in the face of challenges, allowing them to persist in their pursuits despite obstacles. Resilience, born out of adversity, enables one to bounce back from setbacks, learning and growing stronger with each experience. The capacity to embrace change and remain open-minded to new ideas is invaluable in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of life. It involves recognizing opportunities that emerge in times of transformation and being willing to take calculated risks to seize them. These three qualities collectively form a dynamic toolkit for personal and professional success, fostering adaptability, mental fortitude, and a proactive approach to life’s myriad challenges.

For those embarking on the early stages of their journey, I offer a piece of advice: wholeheartedly embrace failures as stepping stones, rather than allowing them to be stumbling blocks on the path to achieving your goals and dreams. Each setback is an invaluable lesson learned or a skill acquired, guiding you toward the right course of action. Rather than viewing failure as a roadblock, see it as a necessary component of growth and development. In this mindset, setbacks become opportunities for refinement, providing the resilience and insight needed to navigate the intricate journey towards success.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instilling a profound sense of resilience, strength and unwavering determination. Survivors of the Cambodian genocide, my parents faced unimaginable hardships, and witnessing their strength in the face of adversity left an indelible mark on my character. Their ability to rebuild their lives as refugees in an unfamiliar country, overcoming the trauma of their past, showcased an unparalleled resilience that became a guiding light in my own life. This resilience, inherited from their experiences, has been the cornerstone of my ability to have courage, confront challenges and persevere in the pursuit of a better future.
