We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Sonshine a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I think my work ethic has definitely ebbed and flowed over the years. I am certainly a procrastinator but I have realized that no matter what everything always gets done.
My work ethic comes from my drive and persistence.
My job isn’t your typical 9-5 job. As CEO of Sonshine and Broccoli entertain Ltd as well as being the Sonshine I play a lot of roles and wear a ton of hats.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important skills I have learned that were impactful in my 20 year journey as Sonshine and Broccoli
1) Know your worth.
This took us some time to grasp however once we fully understood the concept and got super clear of who we are and what we offer things began to flow in a different way.
2) staying authentic to yourself and your brand. Getting super duper clear on who you are and your values. Align yourself with people/customers/brands that fit.
3) Being consistent and persistent.
I think this comes down to a personality trait for sure. I often don’t take no for an answer. Do not be shy to follow up several times or to ask for what you want and need. If you don’t use your voice to communicate than you will never have an answer and grow.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
The last year was one of the most challenging years of my life. Last February I was in a major car accident with my oldest son in the car with me. It was every parents nightmare. I had a broken foot but other than that thank god we were ok. The most challenging part was the emotional aftermath. Thank god I did some major trauma therapy and moved through it.
That weekend was family weekend here in Canada and we were solidly booked for shows. Of course I was not able to perform and thank god Broccoli stepped up and performed on his own.
This challenge was real. Here I was in a boot with a broken foot and had to get back to performing. Tons of questions of course from kids and their families as to what happened as well as major pain and discomfort.
But I used it. I showed up even though it was incredibly hard. I was driven to continue to show up open and honestly and use this as a major teaching moment for myself and the community we have built.
You are way stronger than you think
