Meet Phylicia Adams

We were lucky to catch up with Phylicia Adams recently and have shared our conversation below.

Phylicia, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Developing my confidence started when I went to cosmetology school. I’ve been “doing hair” since I was in the 7th grade but cutting and coloring natural hair I was not comfortable in doing and finally took that step and gained the knowledge I need to be comfortable and confident in providing these services. From there it’s been going up hill ever since.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
People always ask me what made me want to be a hair stylist and my response is “ I got tired of those 3 ponytails my mom would put in my hair”. I self taught myself how to do hair very young and started taking adult clients in the 7th grade. Now, many years later; being a professional hair stylist in a world that is constantly changing I love it! It’s nothing like turning that chair around and seeing my clients reaction. That’s what motivates me! Pushing me harder to be better than I was yesterday.Currently I’m in the M&T Bank Minority & Women Emerging Entrepreneur Program which has been nothing but a huge benefit to my business. My clients love some of the changes I’ve made so far and looking forward to a bunch of changes in the future. I have 2 goals I’m working on and very excited about which are opening up a Buffalo location and dropping my hair care and merch line!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Oh boy, I can say that having patience to deal with people is the ultimate skill any entrepreneur needs. Networking is key! It’s not always what you know but who you know. And lastly having a true passion for whatever your business is. My advice to anyone starting out is to understand it’s ok to put your self first. Running a business is not easy but it’s easy to leave yourself on low fuel. It’s ok to do something for yourself. Celebrate yourself!

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I take a step back and breathe. Then I work on a plan (having structure) so I don’t end right back where I was at.
