We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jessica Bosman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jessica below.
Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my upbringing. In my home, we were always taught how to do many things; from cleaning to repairing a bike or car. If it was something we could do, then we should. Both my parents worked full time jobs and still work to this day. They did co-parenting before I even knew it was a thing. They didn’t let anything hold them back from achieving their goals. They taught me that if I want something I have to work hard for it. One thing that always sticks with me now as an adult, is something my husband says all the time; “think smarter, not harder”. I work every day trying to find new ways to make things easier not just for my family but for my customers as well. Looking for more eco-friendly options in all aspects of my business and easier ways to get the products to them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
It all started after I had my son, I had postpartum depression and didn’t know how to find myself again. I wasn’t doing my hair, or my makeup, and I didn’t care what I wore. I knew I needed to start taking better care of myself, not just for me but for him. I wanted to be a strong woman that he could look up to, and say with pride “yeah, that’s MY mom.” In our home, we started by eliminating things that did not benefit us mentally or physically. The journey started with essential oils and removing toxins from our home, and developed into a whole self care product line. The brand Desert Moon 25 is geared toward all things self care. All of our products are handmade, with many hours of research done on each ingredient. We not only wanted to have products that were good for you but also made a difference. We also wanted to source our products locally here in the United States as much as possible, as well as supporting other small businesses.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Choosing just three qualities is tough, but I’ll do my best. Always test before you sell anything; it doesn’t matter if it’s a physical or virtual product and services. Never be afraid to reach out and ask veterans in the business for guidance. It may seem scary at first and you might be unsure of yourself, but just go for it! You learn as you go, failure is just another step in the learning process.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Right now my biggest struggle is expansion. I’ve been doing my best to get out there on social media, and I do the farmers market locally every Saturday. My husband has also been such a great help; he shares about the company and has recently been putting my business cards at any local store that allows him.
