Meet Celest

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Celest. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Celest, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I see confidence & self-esteem as a superpower that you have to learn to control or who knows what you’ll become. I am a performing artist, I truly need both to do what I love to do which is to create & share music with people. My self-esteem has always been pretty high and my confidence can be all over the place.

My self-esteem took root when I was younger and no matter where I go that’s where I trace it back to. Growing up I was the quiet one at times I still am however my family had different ways of shining a light on me.

My mother would always call me beautiful and nurture my creativity. My granny would praise my mindset and the way I observe the world around me. My brother & cousin did it all & pushed me when they knew I was holding back or being way too shy.

Even though I didn’t always want to hear it, they instilled a love for myself in me. Today it serves as a reinforced foundation so when something or someone makes me doubt myself, I’m reminded of how dope I am. To develop it I load on the sweet talk to myself! The way you talk to yourself matters the most, also plays a part in how confident I present myself. Confidence or the lack of can make or break me honestly

I had horrible stage fright in school. I would freeze up & be in tears afterward, it was embarrassing. I got tired & fed up with that feeling. I can only remember one time when I did not freeze up in front of my peers. I had to recite a poem & I left the class along with my teacher in awe. I felt so accomplished & surprised myself, that feeling became the fuel. Although the fright was present, beforehand I practiced HARD. I practiced until I didn’t need to look at the poem, I practiced in the mirror, & more importantly, I kept in mind what I’d feel in the moment and told myself it’d be ok just keep going. I have no idea where I learned this, but it stayed with me. I practice having that level of confidence in myself & performances to this day because that fear could I always come back around and hold me back.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Celest I’m a singer-songwriter and performing artist! I’m currently focused on giving my fans more music to listen to. I have a new single and my very first music video out now called “Side Eye”. It’s featured on a vibes playlist made by Memphis’s DJ kvng. I’m super excited to have more music and vibes on the way along with festival performances this summer.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My listening skills have gotten me very far in life from playing guitar by ear to understanding what I or the next person needs.

Creativity! I always have the urge to create and bring my ideas to life. It could be by song, or arts and crafts either way I’m hands-on. Sometimes it’s just for me sometimes it’s for whoever. I don’t talk about it much however I hand-make all my merch, it’s frugal and fun for me.

Humility keeps me sane & in the moment.

My advice would be to move at your own pace & don’t let anyone dim your light not even yourself!

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
“Think Like a Monk” by Jay Shetty taught me how to clear the fog & focus on my path in life. I read it on & after my first tour, I come back to it when I need some guidance. Here is one quote that comes to mind.

“I am not who you think I am;
I am not who I think I am;
I am who I think you think I am.”
– Charles Cooley

In other words
“Our identity is wrapped up in what others think of us or, more accurately, what we think others think of us.”- Jay Shetty

No one else is going to live our lives.
It’s so important for us to stay true to who we are, what we want to do, & what we value, or we end up losing ourselves.
