We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexandria Rising. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexandria below.
Alexandria, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I always knew I was a creative person, and that I saw the world differently. Since my earliest days, I always found so much joy in drawing and making art. But, it wasn’t until my late teenage years that I realized that adding beauty to the world was my true purpose in life. I explored many mediums before I started tattooing. I dabbled in photography, poetry, murals, painting and so much more… To me, art is not just making beautiful things, it can be used to communicate an emotion – a universal language. It sends a message or a vision. Art has the power to impact people and ultimately change the world.
All my life experiences and passions lead me to become a tattoo artist. My tattoo style is called “Sacred Armour”, and “Ornamental” style tattoos. The style is heavily inspired by ancient tribal tattoos and the canvas’s natural anatomy. I design pieces that are inspired by the person’s lineage, astrology and overall energy that they exude. I ensure that each tattoo reflects the person’s style, fits and accentuates their form.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Alexandria Rising, I am an Egyptian-Canadian artist and tattoo artist. I specialize in tattoo styles known as; “Sacred Armour”, “blackouts, and “ornamental. These styles of tattoos are heavily inspired by ancient tribal markings from different regions of the world. I take particular interest in these tattoos as I feel like they serve as a connection to one’s spirit, ancestors, and their natural bodies.
My style of tattoos takes a modern spin on ancient artistry. I create my designs intuitively based on the person’s energy, lineage, astrology, and style. I see the tattoos I create as pieces of an armour, adorning and fitting the wearer’s anatomy. I commonly refer to some of my works as permanent jewelry. It is meant to accentuate a form and hold significance to the client.
I’m a strong believer that the art of tattooing is a sacred and healing practice. Tattoos have the power to transform how a person looks and feels – introspectively and to the outside world. It is a spiritual experience and therefore should be treated as one. Creating a clean, comfortable and safe environment is something I pay close attention to. To be trusted by others to make permanent art on their body is an honour. And with that comes great responsibility.
Doing things differently in a modern world by bringing back ancient spiritual practices to tattooing is something that greatly influences what I do. I am currently working on creating a zen experience for my clients at my private studio that is set to open on April 16, 2024. The new space will hold a curated healing sensory experience that will help my guests relax and enjoy their experience.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that helped lead me to where I am today:
– Trust your gut instinct and intuition. Almost all the time if you feel discomfort in your body, or are facing heavy resistance towards something, it is your intuition trying to communicate with you. Ask yourself, does this align with my values, path, and vision? And, if the answer is no – communicate your boundaries, and maintain your authenticity. (This could be a challenging practice for many, but you’ll see it is well worth it in the end)
– Start before you are ready! It is very common for creatives in the early days of their careers to feel intimidated to share their work with the world. “Imposter Syndrome” is something we can learn to overcome by practicing a few things. Don’t wait till everything is perfect to share, just start before you’re ready! Getting out there is the hardest part, once you do it you will learn and grow. You will make mistakes, and fail a bunch of times. It is in the most difficult moments of our journey that we evolve the most. And, if you’re creating work that comes from a genuine place of meaning in your heart, others will connect with your work. Before you know it., you will look back at your journey and see how far you got.
– Create from the heart! Take time to get to know yourself. What you’re passionate about and enjoy doing the most. What your gifts are. What qualities set you and what you do apart. Getting to know yourself and what drives your soul is the most important practice that will lead you to living your purpose.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who appreciates the artistry of my craft. A person who chooses me because they trust and resonate with my work. I love having creative freedom to create art that is unique, intentional and authentic. Holding a safe, clean and comfortable space for everyone involved is very important during a tattoo session.
