We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Isabel Brinck a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isabel, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Discovering purpose in my work has been a transformative journey, necessitating both time and profound introspection. This journey has been instrumental in fostering a deep sense of connection and perseverance. Central to this process has been the exploration and understanding of my creative voice, the development of my unique vision and language, and the invaluable insights gained from engaging with other artists, conducting research, interpreting, and posing critical questions. For me, identifying as a creative is not merely a label but an essential aspect of my being. It’s through this creative lens that I find meaning, joy, and a profound sense of fulfillment. Unlike animals driven solely by instinct, I recognize the necessity of purpose in my creative and spiritual life—a purpose that transcends mere existence.
Creativity isn’t just a hobby or pastime for me; it’s an intrinsic need—a fundamental aspect of my identity. It’s through the act of creating art that I derive purpose, finding solace in the knowledge that my time is being well spent, and my life is imbued with significance.
Navigating the challenges inherent in a creative field requires more than mere talent or passion; it necessitates a clear vision and a purpose that surpasses any obstacle encountered along the way. Every setback is an opportunity for growth, a testament to the resilience needed to succeed in the face of adversity.
I firmly believe that I am exactly where I am meant to be, guided by a cosmic alignment of talent, passion, and purpose. It’s a journey marked by complexity and nuance, one that defies oversimplification. Yet, amidst the uncertainty and struggle, there lies a profound sense of fulfillment—a testament to the intrinsic value of living a life aligned with one’s true calling.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am professional visual artist, primarily focused on mixed media painting. I was born in Chile in 1965, I have a degree on Graphic Design from University of Chile and I moved to Miami almost 20 years ago, in 2003, where I’ve been based creating art with an active participation in the Miami art scene and abroad. My work has been showcased at solo as well as group exhibitions and international Art Fairs across America, South America and Europe and is part of private collections in various parts of the world. Through psychic automatism, strive to create “one of a kind” paintings working with abstraction from poetics with lyrical expressive resources and forms that establish a more aerial space-time relationships, with surreal and dreamlike overtones.
My next exhibits are:
September 6 to 28 / a Solo Show at Helm Contemporary Gallery, New York
October 4 to 26 ? a Solo Show at the Embassy of Chile in Washington DC
My work can be always be seen at my studio, located in Pinecrest Miami, scheduling a previous appointment directly with me via whatsapp
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say that discipline, love for what I do (passion) and honesty on my work, has been the main qualities o, that have forged me as the artist that I am today. There is still a long way to go if life allows me, though these 3 qualities , on my way of thinking, are the basic secret of success.
As an advice to emerging artist, I would say
Work on a regular basis
Don’t try to please others with your art
Don’t take frustration personally
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When life overwhelms me, I have a few go-to strategies to regain my balance. First, I calm my mind, reminding myself that everything’s okay. Yoga is my lifeline—it nourishes my mind, body, and soul. Good sleep is non-negotiable, too. And I make sure to carve out me-time, without pushing myself too hard. Painting is my sanctuary. It’s like meditation on canvas, soothing my anxiety and lifting my spirits. It’s amazing how a few strokes can turn chaos into calm.
