Meet James Moorer

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Moorer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.

James, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity is like any muscle in the body, it must be developed through habits that allow you to build the discipline to always be in a creative state. Moreover, creativity requires stimulus from places that take you away from the common and tap into possibilities that aren’t found in our day-to-day routines. And so we must constantly seek out new and exciting experiences, that challenge ourselves to step beyond our comfort into the unseen.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a working screenwriter and author based in Los Angeles. I write dark thrillers and horror where the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I’m also a motivational speaker with two books on living your most epic life. I work as the Director of Outreach and Diversity Initiatives for a company called Roadmap Writers. I am also a member of the Organization of Black Screenwriters as well as the Independent Writers Caucus. Late last year I launched a publishing company focused on books-to-screen called Dark Anthem Press.

I am also a father and grandfather who loves Pancakes.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Early on I learned the value of public speaking and channeled that into every job I’ve had since I was 18. But I would also have to say that I developed a powerful sense of resilience that has allowed me to weather the struggles life has set on my path. However, my outlook on life and pursuing any dream has been the one quality that kept me asking What If? I spend less time thinking about why I can’t do something, and imagining what happens when I can.
?

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Practice Grace. There is nothing more wasteful than spending time worrying about something that is out of your control. Worry has never made anyone rich or improved your health. Have the grace to know and let go of the things that are out of your control and how you respond to them.
