We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Shepard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I’m happy to share how I keep my creativity alive for interior design and floral design.
For interior design, I find inspiration in everyday life. I pay attention to the colors, textures, and patterns around me, and I often take photos of things that catch my eye. I also like to visit museums, art galleries, and design stores to get new ideas.
For floral design, I find inspiration in nature. I often collect flowers and leaves to use in my arrangements. I also like to read books and magazines about floral design, and I follow some great floral designers on social media.
I think it’s important to keep your mind open and to be constantly looking for new sources of inspiration. The more you expose yourself to different things, the more creative you’ll become.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve always had a passion for interior design, and I believe it stems from my upbringing in a construction family. Growing up, I was surrounded by discussions about design, materials, and construction techniques, which sparked my interest in creating beautiful and functional spaces.
My family’s involvement in the construction industry gave me a unique perspective on design. I learned about the technical aspects of building a home, as well as the importance of aesthetics and functionality. This combination of knowledge and experience has shaped my approach to interior design, allowing me to create spaces that are both visually appealing and practical.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been exposed to the world of interior design from a young age. It has allowed me to develop a deep appreciation for the art of creating beautiful and functional spaces, and I’m excited to continue exploring this passion in my career.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Networking, keeping up on future design trends, and staying positive are all important aspects of a successful interior design career. Networking allows you to connect with other professionals in the field, learn about new opportunities, and build relationships that can be beneficial to your career. Keeping up on future design trends helps you stay ahead of the curve and create designs that are both stylish and functional. Finally, staying positive is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance and overcoming challenges that may arise in your career.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
My mom introduced me to the book “Why We Buy” by Paco Underhill. I found it fascinating how the author explored the psychological factors that influence our shopping habits and how many are actually designed based. The book provided valuable insights into why we make certain purchasing decisions and how marketers use psychological and design tactics such as color, lighting and placement to influence our behavior. It was an eye-opening read.
