Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dana SanMar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dana, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Developing confidence and self-esteem, particularly within artistic expression, is a deeply personal journey unique to each individual. Exploring diverse interests and venturing beyond my comfort zone has been vital. Additionally, I’ve learned to recognize and appreciate the inherent artistic traits within myself that I once overlooked. I’ve also found that refraining from forcing the creative process has been extremely helpful. Creativity, style, and confidence in one’s art are qualities that cannot be rushed; they evolve gradually and organically through consistent practice and exploration.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hello, I’m Dana SanMar, an artist and illustrator. My focus lies in creating children’s illustrations, particularly for book covers and picture books. I’m passionate about infusing whimsy and fantasy into my work, while also addressing relevant themes of our time. Outside of commissioned projects, I enjoy exhibiting personal pieces in local galleries and look forward to becoming more active in Atlanta’s art community. If you enjoy my work, feel free to follow me on Instagram for updates on events and new projects.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that have had a profound impact are adaptability, community, and self-compassion. The ability to adapt and embrace new challenges has been crucial for growth. My advice for those starting out is to remain open-minded and willing to experiment, as this nurtures creativity and resilience. Building a supportive artistic community has been invaluable in combating the isolation that often accompanies freelance work. I encourage newcomers to seek out like-minded individuals for collaboration, feedback, and inspiration. Lastly, practicing self-compassion is essential. Just as one nurtures a plant, we must care for our creative process. Be patient with yourself, learn from setbacks, and trust in your journey’s natural progression.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was believing in my dreams and offering unconditional encouragement and support. Their belief in my abilities empowered me to pursue my passions with confidence. Additionally, they instilled in me the importance of critical thinking and resilience. Moreover, they gave me a love for learning and curiosity, fostering a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. These lessons have been invaluable throughout my life, guiding me through challenges and shaping me into the person I am today. I am endlessly grateful for their support and guidance.
