Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Linsley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Although I can nail down one primary person that instilled in me a strong work ethic, there have been many examples of good and bad work ethics in my life. The #1 influence in my success was Paul, my dad. He taught my brothers and I from a very young age, the importance of learning a skill and becoming proficient and professional. At the age of 13 I was learning how to install roofs, frame walls, mechanic on small engines, etc.
We were encouraged to understand how some thing works and what it was used for. I got hurt, made mistakes, and learned quickly because of it.
I will forever be in debt to my father for the freedom he gave me to work hard and the success it has brought me. My father died in 2007 from an electrical accident. He owned and operated a roofing company from the age of 19 until his passing. Over the years, I have met person after person in our community that has benefitted in some way from his hard work ethic and skill set.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I love to be busy and I love a good challenge. In the current moment most of my time is taken up by my 4 kids and amazing wife, and our 3 businesses.
I own and operate a Design Build Company that focusses on Outdoor living. My passion is creating unique outdoor spaces that create memorable experiences. Some of Valley Design Builds more interesting projects have consisted of personal skate parks, pump tracks, bike tunnels, mini golf putt putts, mtn. bike trails, ponds and waterfalls, etc.
I am also an owner in two other companies. The 1st is a swimming pool construction company called Dip Pools. We offer Luxury Plunge pools with both heating and cooling capabilities.
The 2nd is a Pool maintenance and retail company called Poolwerx Northern Utah. We currently have two retail locations working on our next in SLC.
I love finding a need in the market and filling that need. I also love working with people and building teams!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience: Life is tough. Wether it is your personal journey or career journey, it can be tough. There are really ‘low’ lows and really ‘high’ highs. Mistakes will be made and you will fail. The resilient person will always come on top. A mental resilience has allowed me to push through some really difficult times in my life and career. I have always come out stronger after the struggle.
Adaptability: You have to be able to adapt. Markets, technology, tools, interests, etc are constantly changing. You need to be able to adapt how you do things. Have the ability to learn new ways and then do it again and again if necessary.
Kindness: Be kind. Treat people like people. Create relationships of trust that last. Just be a good human being that cares about everyones success. Be the go giver.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I not sure, but I think this will be something that I will always deal with. I am, by nature, a very busy person. I love to set goals, schedules, tasks, etc. In doing this, I flirt with a fine line of being overwhelmed or feeling just right.
I constantly have to remind myself that if something doesn’t happen when it needs to, how it needs to, or even happen at all; it will all be okay. Some times we get so swallowed up in our work or hobbies, we forget to breath.
One thing I have learned is it is okay to do something for yourself. Especially if it makes you a better boss, father, spouse, friend, etc.
