We recently connected with Shadea Murphy and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shadea, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I was born and raised in a town called Cape May County, NJ. Out of the 94,000 people that reside here , African Americans only make up 4.88% of that population so being the only person that looks like me in the room is not something I’m not used to. At 28 & a new business owner, I am still in the process of learning how to navigate these rooms with grace & let me tell you it’s not easy! But one thing is for certain, the belief and confidence that I have in myself & brand will always speak for itself. I’m not afraid to network or pitch myself, plus I know it’s pivotal to have more people that look like us in these rooms & it has to start somewhere!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Shadea and I own Spiked Delights Mobile Bartending Service. For the last 3 years we have grown in ways unimaginable! We do events ranging from weddings, birthdays, celebrity events and more! Servicing the whole east coast , we are the premier bartending service for you!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
3 qualities that were most impactful on my journey would have to be my resilience, consistency, & my ability to stay teachable! If you are just starting off, please understand that things will go wrong, you may go broke & everyone will not support you but that is where resilience comes in! Consistency is important as well because there will be days that you don’t feel like working but you have to push through in order to build your long term goals! I have always been transparent with my shortcomings because I know that it’s just another thing I can learn from! I am never too good or too smart to take advice or guidance from anyone!
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I don’t have an ideal client , I just love people who are down to earth , likes to have fun while also providing a professional bar service for their guest!
