Meet Latoya Mckelvin

We were lucky to catch up with Latoya Mckelvin recently and have shared our conversation below.

Latoya, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a former Ballet dancer and Founder of Movement Matters Collective, I have often been the only Black Woman in the room. Though it has not always been the most natural sensation I have come to see that a fully embodied latoya and the multi-facets of my identity as my superpower. I don’t shy away from who I am. My background and perspective are unique and make any room that I am in just that more impactful. Embracing this difference helps to create genuine connections, and fosters an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome. Leaning into the the circumstance of being often times being othered can be an opportunity to learn grow and provide opportunities for others to learn and grow. Knowing the magnitude of what representations means and and it’s impact. I understand the significance of being a visible Black leader in the wellness space. For some, it might be their first encounter with a Black wellness professional. I strive to show that movement and mindfulness are for everyone, regardless of background. By staying true to myself, I can empower others to embrace their own unique wellness journeys. And that’s the true power of representation.

As a former dancer and the founder of Movement Matters Collective, I’ve often been the only Black woman in a room. Initially, it wasn’t always comfortable. But over time, I’ve come to see my full self, Latoya, and all the facets of my identity as my superpower.

I don’t shy away from who I am. My unique background and perspective makes any room I am in a little more of a welcoming space for everyone. Embracing the differences in thoughts, backgrounds, and identities helps to build empathy, fosters genuine connections and inclusivity. In fact, I look at being “othered” as an opportunity for growth – both for myself and those I encounter.

Representation matters deeply. Understanding the impact I can have as a visible Black leader in wellness motivates me. For some, I might be their first exposure to a Black wellness professional. I strive to show everyone, regardless of background, that movement and mindfulness are accessible and transformative.

By staying true to myself, no matter who’s around, I hope to empower others to embrace their own wellness journeys.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Flex your curiosity muscle by asking questions, exploring different paths, and embrace being a continuous learner. It’s in the exploration that you’ll discover your spark.

Find your passion-driven purpose. It’s not always the thing you’re good at, instead identify what ignites you! Then, see how your passion can address a need or solve a problem for others. Any gaps in skillset can be developed with through curiosity (continuous leaarnign and community)

The journey is just as important as the destination. Have a direction and set goals, but don’t get tunnel vision. Enjoy the process, track your progress through journalling, and celebrate your wins along the way. Reflection allows you to learn, adapt, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
At Movement Matters Collective (MMC), we’re always looking to connect with passionate and knowledgeable individuals who share our vision of inclusive and transformative well-being.
