Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sandra “SanD” Romair. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sandra “SanD”, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I have found that fitting in isn’t something I do all to well, I have a bold personality, as you can see by my tattoos. I have felt the odd man out at times, epsecially in the industry I have chosen. Photography to me is an art. Once that image is made; it is now what the person viewing perceives it to be. My perception of what people think of me isn’t always true. I have learned to always smile, and introduce myself to anyone willing to shake my hand or smile for my camera. My love language is photographing the people I hold dear to me. With photography I have found sucess in doing what I love and never backing down.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a photographer based in the Houston Area, and have been behind the lens for about 15 years now. I shoot film, instant film, and digital. I specialize in Portraits, Fashion Photography and Documentary. I love working with all of my clients and look forward to working with anyone looking for creative photo sessions.
I recently opened a new Photo Studio near 290 in NORTHWEST HOUSTON. The at Home Studio, is open for all content creators and clients alike. The studio is equipped with off camera flash, strobes, modifiers and umbrellas. Including backdrops and much much more. We just opened last year in June and look forward to all the creative clients to come.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 qualities or skills I feel have impacted my journey the most, has been: 1) communication with people. Understanding your client and their needs is so important. 2) continue to build your portfolio and work on your niche. I have found that when I expirement with my lighting and different textures I can create something dramatic; something I wouldn’t have found had I not played around with my different lighting settings and strobes. 3) Keep going, even when no one is banging down your door with jobs, keep pushing. Your work isn’t verified by how many instagram likes you get, but more so how it makes you feel. I enjoy photography, more importantly I feel good when I create heirloom memories.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Sometimes I do tend to get overwhelmed, especially with the balancing of the new studio, the marketing needs of my small business, as well as the daily life I share with my family. When I get overwhelmed I step away from everything, I take my kids to the park or out and about and I just enjoy taking pictures of simple objects or birds. Sometimes it’s slowing down to smell the roses or in my case photograph them; to relax and reset.
