We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Priscilla Perez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Priscilla below.
Hi Priscilla , so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
It wasn’t always easy for me to take risks. In fact, it’s something I still struggle with as a business owner. To become more comfortable taking risks, I began to assess whether taking a chance it worth it. Ultimately, being in business is about taking risks and once I realized that success is never a guarantee, it helped me to overcome that fear. Nothing guarantees success so I began to learn to develop a plan. Listening to my heart and gut and asking myself, “What do I really want?” Once I made that part clear I began to start an actionable plan and commit to making it a reality.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello! My name is Priscilla! Becoming a maker of with natural soy wax candles began with a desire to not just develop a clean product in hopes but a product safe for children. As I child, I loved to walk into places and smell the soaps, candles and fragrances but as a 9 year old little girl, I struggled with horrible migraine episodes. So bad that my vision would get so blurry and my hands and tongue would go numb for 24 hours. It was then that I had to stay away from chemicals and scents and anything with a heavy fragrance. As I got older and had children, the desire grew to have clean products in my home and the desire of scent never left me. So they journey began in developing natural soy wax scented candles. I wanted something handcrafted and that I could provide to other mothers and families that would not be overwhelming or trigger headaches.
After many years of fails I didnt give up. I never looked at what others were doing or creating. I never compared my creativity to others but instead put blinders on and kept pressing on until I was successful at my craft.
You see, social media has made it easy to compare yourself with others or keep you from using your own creative ideas. I had to back away from all that. I had to stay on my own journey to take risks and craft something beautiful.
Fast forward to 2024 and we have made over 35 candle scents in over 6 sizes. We began to get into stores and this year we launch our very first commercial.
Has it been easy? Absolutely not, in fact life sometimes takes us on a path we may not be ready for. But when I think of the stories that inspire our candles it keeps me going. It’s bringing joy to others that drives me and our journey has just begun!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My advice to others that are early in the journey is take your time and it’s ok to make mistakes. Making mistakes is what makes you better at what you do. Don’t overthink the process and just take it day by day.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
This is a great question. When I feel overwhelmed, I pray. I pray and talk to God. Its that sweet presence that fills me up and let’s me know everything will be ok.
