We recently connected with Anthony Kabiity and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
My creativity thrives on real-life experiences. In my photography, while ideas may sometimes feel recycled, human interactions always bring freshness. Whether it’s a conversation with a friend, the complexities of a relationship, or just exploring a new street, these encounters shape my work.
When I hit a creative block, I know it’s not a lack of ideas but a lack of new experiences. Conversations with others often spark new inspiration. So, I keep seeking out those moments of connection, knowing they’ll breathe life into my art.
Through my lens, I aim to capture not just scenes but the essence of human emotion and connection, particularly the anxiety of getting to that particular moment and the experience of human connection, human collaboration, and art-making with the individuals in the room bringing the image to life, and the individuals being photographed.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a Lebanese journalist and photographer based out of Detroit, Michigan, my passion lies in capturing the essence of fashion and music through my photography. My work follows a unique narrative, focusing on non-traditional faces and employing a camp-style process to bring their stories to life, particularly with fashion and emotion.
I am deeply interested in reshaping the standards of beauty, paving the way for a new era where diversity reigns supreme. Each photograph I take is not just a moment but a deliberate effort to challenge societal norms and celebrate individuality. In my world, there are no limitations to what beauty can be. It’s about embracing every facet of humanity and showcasing it in all its glory.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been particularly impactful: creativity, adaptability, and collaboration.
Embracing creativity has allowed me to carve out a unique niche and constantly push boundaries.
Adaptability has been crucial in navigating the room I am working in and the subjects in that room. You must adapt to your environment for comfort and to create art.
Collaboration has played a pivotal role in connecting with different artists, designers, and directors who can bring a different perspective, which ultimately creates a beautiful story and image.
The advice I can give to folks who are early in their journey would be to work and create with an open mind. Be receptive to different ideas, cherish human connection, and create with love and intention.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I have learned that I should take a step back and put my work on pause until I feel inspired again.
That process might take a couple of hours, might even take days or weeks but I have concluded that it is what works best for me. The strategy is to remove yourself so that your light bulb can turn off and rest, before it comes back on.
