We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lando Burch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lando below.
Lando, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by constantly engulfing myself in my craft and others work. I don’t like to be confined to one genre or instrument or style, I want to explore and learn as much as I can in music. If I’m not feeling creative or I can’t seem to get further on a song, I try making a different genre that I haven’t before. I have a lot of unreleased tracks I’ve made to overcome writer’s block. Maybe I should release some of those one day…
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Lando Burch. I’m an electronic music artist, producer, and DJ. I grew up in Colorado where I went to high school and then college at the University of Colorado in Boulder. I was in the film program getting a degree in audio and video editing while also making music from my dorm room. I booked my first live show at the Fox Theatre 10 days before Covid shut down everything. I had a taste of what I could be doing and was itching for that experience again. During Covid, I spent hours, days, and months getting better at producing and making music with my free time. Around June of 2020, I landed my first Spotify editorial playlist placement and began gaining traction on TikTok with my song “Summerfruit”. It was at that time that I decided to pursue music as a full time career and move out to Los Angeles after graduating college in May of 2021. After Covid began to become less threatening, I started booking shows again. I played all around Boulder and Denver and was becoming a more well known name among the scene. I then moved to Los Angeles and had to start from scratch. I’ve lived in LA for almost 3 years now and have dropped a new album, EP, and a handful of singles and have been able to play at some of the cities most renowned night clubs and venues. Between LA and Denver there is no shortage of opportunity. Some of the most notable shows include opening for Yung Bae on tour, The Underground Music Showcase twice, Sonic Bloom, direct support for Bag Raiders, RJD2, and Dafna. Coming off of my second sold out headlining show in Denver at Lost Lake Lounge, I’m eager to approach bigger and more exciting opportunities which are in the works.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Humility was one quality that I learned the importance of later on. It feels much better to have others speak highly of you rather than yourself. Let the music speak for itself but also don’t be too humble, prove to everyone that you are good at what you do without being cocky.
Mastering is a technical skill that I learned through my education in college. It’s saved me thousands of dollars and it’s nice to have complete control over your work. Be good enough at it and you can even make extra income by mastering for others.
Confidence is maybe the biggest one. Learning how to put yourself out there and feel good about your work. Whether that be in producing or preforming, it’s a great skill to have. To not get discouraged when a song isn’t quite sounding how you want it to, it will eventually. Brush off a botched transition when you’re playing to a crowd because I promise no one noticed. Ask ask ask, I was able to book a slot at one of the most famous clubs in Venice because I kept asking for months. The worst anyone can say is no, or better yet, not yet.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My manager JD. He was a talent buyer for local venues in Boulder. Recently graduated from CU and like me, was trying to figure out what to do. He found my SoundCloud when I was still doing this for fun back in 2019 and saw potential in me. He was the one that booked me for my first show at the Fox and after my set he presented me with a proposal; to manage me, as a pet project, for free. As a young and admittedly naive artist of course I said yes. Although, JD and I have been a team ever since and he’s taught me so much about the industry and business while also giving me an unwavering amount of support both in music and in life.
