Meet Sankalp Dubey

We recently connected with Sankalp Dubey and have shared our conversation below.

Sankalp, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
As a young photographer growing up in the enchanting town of Agra, I was deeply influenced by my father’s unwavering work ethic. His commitment to his government job, despite the challenges of bureaucracy and the demands of daily life, instilled in me a profound sense of dedication and resilience.

In the bustling streets of Agra, amidst the echoes of history and the vibrant colors of daily life, I found solace behind the lens of my camera. With each click, I sought to capture the essence of my surroundings, inspired by the stories unfolding around me and driven by a desire to share them with the world.

Yet, it was not always easy. There were moments of doubt and frustration, times when the path ahead seemed uncertain. But it was in those moments that I leaned on the lessons learned from my father – the importance of patience, the value of hard work, and the power of perseverance.

With each challenge I faced, I reminded myself of the resilience that ran through my veins, inherited from generations past. And slowly, but surely, my passion for photography blossomed into a love for cinematography.

Today, I look back on my journey with gratitude. It was the combination of my families work ethic and my own determination that propelled me forward, guiding me towards a career that I truly love. In India, where every corner holds a story waiting to be told, I am honored to capture the magic of life through my lens, inspired by the legacy of my father and driven by a passion that knows no bounds here in Hollywood.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Cinematography is not just a profession for me – it’s a passion that ignites my soul and fills me with an insatiable desire to create visual magic. From the moment I first picked up a camera, I was entranced by the power of storytelling through moving images, and I knew that I had found my calling in the world of cinematography.

The most thrilling aspect of cinematography lies in its ability to transport audiences to new worlds, evoke emotions, and ignite imaginations. Each frame is a canvas upon which stories come to life, and I am fortunate to play a role in crafting those narratives.

My journey into the heart of cinematography led me to the bustling streets of Hollywood, where dreams are born and creativity knows no bounds. Working alongside some of the industry’s most talented minds, I have had the privilege of bringing to life stories that captivate and inspire.

There’s a palpable energy in Los Angeles, an electric buzz that pulses through the air and fuels the creative spirit. From the iconic studios of Paramount to the legendary streets of Sunset Boulevard, every corner of this city is alive with possibility.

But perhaps the most exciting part of working in Hollywood is the people – the actors, directors, and fellow cinematographers who share my passion for storytelling. Collaborating with these visionaries is an exhilarating experience, as we come together to breathe life into scripts and turn dreams into reality.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

My determination to pursue my dreams knows no bounds, especially when it comes to my passion for cinematography. From the earliest moments of my journey, I knew that this was the path I was meant to follow. With unwavering resolve, I embarked on a quest to master the technical intricacies of the cinematic craft.

Armed with a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for experience, I delved deep into the world of cinematography, devouring every book, tutorial, and mentorship opportunity that came my way. Through countless hours of study and practice, I honed my technical skills, mastering the art of lighting, composition, and camera operation.

But perhaps the most defining aspect of my journey has been my willingness to take risks. In an industry as competitive and ever-changing as cinematography, the ability to embrace uncertainty and step outside of one’s comfort zone is essential. Whether it’s experimenting with new techniques, pushing creative boundaries, or seizing opportunities that others might shy away from, I have always been willing to take the leap.

It is this combination of determination, technical knowledge, and risk-taking ability that has propelled me forward on my cinematic odyssey. And as I continue to pursue my dreams with unwavering passion and relentless determination, I am confident that the journey ahead will be as exhilarating as the one that has brought me to this point.

The one and only advice i would give to folks in their journey is that if you dreamt about it, you gotta make it happen.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
As a small-town boy from India, hailing from a humble background, the opportunities I’ve been afforded seem like miracles, all thanks to the boundless love and sacrifice of my parents. Growing up in a household where financial resources were scarce, my parents worked tirelessly, saving every penny they could to ensure that my elder brother and I could live a life they could only dream of.

Their unwavering commitment to our well-being was evident in every sacrifice they made, every obstacle they overcame. From foregoing their own comforts to ensure we had food on the table, to prioritizing our education above all else, their selflessness knew no bounds. Their big-heartedness was not just a trait; it was a way of life.

Their relentless support and encouragement fueled our dreams, instilling in us a belief that anything was possible with hard work and determination. Today, as I look around and see the life my brother and I are living, it feels like a dream—a dream made possible by the unwavering love and sacrifice of our parents.

Every success, every achievement, bears the imprint of their love and support. They are the silent heroes behind the scenes, the guiding lights that have illuminated our path through life’s darkest moments. And for that, I will be eternally grateful. They are not just our parents; they are our pillars of strength, our source of inspiration, and the reason why our dreams have become reality.
