We recently connected with Kaelyn Pyke and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaelyn , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
In short I remember that even if I am the only one that looks like me in the room I am not the only one with shared experiences. I think it is really easy to other ourselves and expect people to other you. I try to go through my life with the desire to understand others so that we can better serve our communities. I believe that when I know someone’s story I am better able to understand and respect their perspective. I know that I am also the holder of an incredible story and I hope that others ask for that story so that I too can share.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In the realm of theater education, my mission is clear: to champion inclusivity, empower the next generation, and foster a supportive community where everyone is seen.
As a facilitator of learning, my role extends far beyond teaching technical skills. I believe in providing guidance and mentorship that goes hand in hand with nurturing confidence and creativity. Through workshops and educational initiatives, I strive to create spaces where individuals can explore their talents and develop their skills in a supportive environment.
We have been so honored to be welcomed into 9 different elementary schools in our rural area spanning two states and 5 districts. This is an incredible opportunity to bring live theater to the Walla Walla Valley. We are so thankful for the support we have in the actors, director, donors, and school districts. Partnering with this community has been a pleasure and I look forward to future projects. The open arms we have received from the community brings us comfort in knowing that others also believe in this dream.
My commitment to advocating for the underrepresented is at the core of everything I do. Seeing yourself in the characters represented on stage and being able to be someone that brings that to life is incredibly valuable. Whether through inclusive casting practices or community outreach programs, I am dedicated to creating opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to participate in and contribute to the theatrical community.
Central to my philosophy is the belief in the transformative power of theater, especially for young people. I am passionate about providing youth with the opportunity to engage in all aspects of the theatrical experience, both on and off stage. Through mentorship programs and youth-led productions, I aim to cultivate a new generation of confident and compassionate individuals who are equipped to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace.
In addition to my work in theater education, I am a staunch advocate for restorative justice within all spaces, especially in theater where we ask our participants and audience to be so open to vulnerability. I believe in creating environments that promote empathy, accountability, and healing, and actively work to address systemic inequalities and internal bias within the community.
Through my dedication to inclusivity, empowerment, and social justice, I am making a meaningful impact on the world of theater education. My journey is fueled by a passion for creating a more supportive community for all, and I am committed to continuing this work for years to come.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Collaborative solutions, seeking out stories, and building community are foundational outlooks that shape personal growth and societal progress. This is the core to the philosophy that has shaped who I am today and who I wish to be. These have not always been important to me, but fostering them daily has been invaluable to my life. Embracing these values begins with recognizing the inherent worth and potential contribution of every individual to society. Cultivating these skills involves fostering empathy, open-mindedness, and a commitment to collective well-being.
To have collaborative solutions we must be willing to work together across diverse perspectives and experiences. Encouraging teamwork, active listening, and respect for differing viewpoints fosters collaboration in all spheres of life. While working with those who don’t share our outlook on life might not be our initial desire, it is a worthwhile one. The easiest way I have found to do this starts with seeking out stories. Everyone has an important story to share. By embracing storytelling as a tool for connection, individuals can cultivate compassion and appreciation for the richness of human experiences.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
In my life I have been honored with mentors that have inspired me, understood me, and pushed me to my full potential. Through their wisdom and experience, mentors have and continue to provide me with invaluable insights, igniting inspiration within to reach greater heights. They offer a beacon of understanding, seeing our potential even when we may doubt ourselves, and guiding us with unwavering support and belief. Their guidance empowers us to navigate challenges with resilience and determination, shaping us into the best versions of ourselves. I have been blessed in my life to have many different mentors for the different interests that I have had in life. Their expertise has been completely life altering.
Mentors not only share knowledge but also instill confidence, fostering a sense of belief in our abilities. Their mentorship creates a safe space for growth, where we can explore our passions and ambitions without fear of judgment. With their encouragement, I have been able to dream bigger and strive harder, knowing that I am not alone on this journey. Ultimately, mentors leave an indelible mark on our lives, enriching us with lessons that transcend mere skills, empowering us to embrace our full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
