meet Dola Posh

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dola Posh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dola , we can’t begin to explain how much we appreciate you sharing about your PPD experience, but we can say that so many in our community are suffering from or have suffered from postpartum issues including postpartum depression and so you sharing your story and how you overcame it might help someone who is going through it right now or in the future. What can you share with us about how you overcame PPD? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Overcoming postpartum depression is a journey unique to each individual. Still, in my experience, it was a combination of self-expression, therapy, and embracing my new role as a mother that helped me find my way back to myself.

Firstly, I turned to therapy, recognizing that I was struggling with my mental health. Through therapy, I gained tools to cope with the overwhelming emotions and thoughts that were consuming me. It provided a safe space for me to explore my feelings and work through my challenges.

Secondly, I found solace in self-expression through my art. Despite the difficulties I was experiencing, I channelled my emotions into a creative project, which became a form of therapy in itself. By embracing my passion for photography and storytelling, I found a way to reconnect with myself and rediscover my identity beyond motherhood.

Finally, embracing my new role as a mother was crucial to my recovery. Despite the challenges, I found moments of joy and fulfilment in caring for my daughter. Recognizing motherhood’s beauty and strength helped me redefine myself and find purpose in my new identity.

Overall, it was a combination of therapy, self-expression through art, and embracing motherhood that helped me overcome postpartum depression. This journey taught me to prioritize my mental health, reconnect with my passions, and find strength in my new role as a mother.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I believe my journey’s three most impactful qualities were resilience, self-expression, and seeking support.

Resilience helped me navigate tough times, reminding me to bounce back from setbacks and celebrate small wins. For those starting out, I suggest practising self-compassion and finding inspiration from others who’ve overcome similar obstacles.

Self-expression through my art was vital for healing and rediscovering myself. I encourage others to explore different creative outlets that resonate with them, trusting in the power of self-expression for personal growth.

Seeking support was also key. Knowing when to ask for help and building a supportive network can make a difference. Remember, you’re not alone in your journey.

In summary, resilience, self-expression, and seeking support were pivotal in my journey. To those beginning theirs, I urge you to embrace these qualities, trust in your unique voice, and lean on others for guidance along the way. Your journey is yours to navigate, and you’ll find your path forward with perseverance.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
“The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron has been instrumental in my journey. It offers valuable nuggets of wisdom that have profoundly impacted my development.

One of its powerful teachings is Morning Pages, where I write three pages each morning, allowing thoughts to flow freely. This practice helped me silence my inner critic and gain clarity on my path.

Another gem is the concept of Artist Dates—a dedicated time each week to nurture creativity through playful activities. By embracing spontaneity and joy, I reconnected with my inner child and unlocked new realms of possibility.

Overall, “The Artist’s Way” taught me to trust my creative instincts, embrace imperfection, and cultivate a sense of playfulness. It continues to inspire me on my journey of self-discovery and artistic expression.
