We were lucky to catch up with Richard Weiss recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Richard, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My Mom & Dad used to work as a cab drivers and my dad doing truck driving, they would work so hard everyday when i was a kid, just seeing them do that to support my family is what motivates my own career prospects, so i just continuously churn out music and basically make a new song everyday
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
my main focus has been music production/DJ’ing professionally
I’m working on getting a few of my labels and companies started as a non-profits, and planning on getting my livestream festival known as the riddim circus an actual plot of land where people can go to and basically see a bunch of underground artists like me
i will also be working on getting my M.A in Music Theory & History
my branding is a clown cause of how i grew up and what i got into but my stage name comes from a clown long ago who did standup and music composition so in a sense I’m doing the same thing
and i have a new EP coming out within the next couple weeks, don’t think the name is appropriate for this but it’s being released as of the time I’m doing this.
I’m starting a podcast called ‘Under The Big Top’. The first episode will be released on Saturday the 13th on all platforms
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In the journey of music production, DJing, and event hosting, several key qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge stand out as particularly impactful. Here are three essential ones, along with advice for those starting their journey:
1. Mastery of the technical aspects of music production, DJing equipment, and event hosting tools is crucial. This includes understanding software programs like Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or FL Studio for music production, as well as DJ software such as Serato or Traktor for mixing and performing live. Additionally, knowledge of sound systems, lighting setups, and other event production equipment is essential for successful event hosting.
Invest time in learning and practicing with your tools regularly. Take advantage of online tutorials, courses, and forums dedicated to music production, DJing, and event management. Experiment with different techniques and workflows to find what works best for you. Networking with other professionals in the industry can also provide valuable insights and opportunities for growth.
2. Creativity and Originality: In a crowded field, creativity and originality set artists apart. Developing a unique sound as a music producer, crafting innovative DJ sets, and curating memorable events require creativity and a willingness to think outside the box. Whether it’s experimenting with new sounds and genres, incorporating unconventional techniques into your performances, or conceptualizing fresh event themes and experiences, creativity is key to making a lasting impression.
Cultivate your creativity by exploring a wide range of musical styles, techniques, and influences. Don’t be afraid to take risks and push boundaries in your work. Collaborating with other artists, attending live performances, and seeking inspiration from diverse sources can help stimulate your creative juices. Remember that authenticity is paramount—stay true to yourself and your artistic vision.
3. Communication and Networking: Strong communication skills and an extensive network of contacts are invaluable assets in the music industry. Whether it’s collaborating with other artists, building relationships with venue owners and promoters, or connecting with fans and followers, effective communication and networking can open doors to new opportunities and help you grow your career.
Actively seek out opportunities to network with other professionals in the music and event industries. Attend industry events, workshops, and conferences, and don’t hesitate to introduce yourself and strike up conversations with fellow attendees. Utilize social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn to connect with peers, share your work, and engage with fans and followers. Remember to nurture relationships by staying in touch, offering support, and being genuine in your interactions.
By honing these qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge, aspiring music producers, DJs, and event hosts can pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career in the dynamic world of music and entertainment.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Honestly keeping a steady job till i can actually become popular enough to be financially free as an artist.
