Meet James Kwon

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Kwon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi James, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Having a strong sense of what you believe in and what matters to you can provide a foundation for resilience. Believing in your ability to overcome challenges and stay true to your values can help you navigate difficult times. I had a network of supportive parents who were my mentors. I saw how hard they worked from an early age and knew that a strong mindset and hard work was vital for success. Facing and overcoming challenges has built resilience by teaching you coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and the confidence that you can handle adversity in the future. Each time you overcome a difficulty, it can strengthen your resilience for future challenges. Cultivating a positive outlook, optimism, and a growth mindset can help you see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning rather than insurmountable obstacles. Maintaining a hopeful attitude and focusing on solutions rather than problems can bolster resilience. Being open to change, flexible in your thinking, and willing to adapt to new circumstances can enhance your resilience by helping you navigate unexpected challenges and setbacks more effectively.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi, my name is James, the owner of Village Square Pizza in New York City. We just opened our new Midtown location in Herald Square at 147 W 35th Street (7th Ave) and preparing to open our newest location in the Upper West Side. I’ve been obsessed with pizza since I was a little kid and knew that this was something I wanted to be a part of since the beginning. I fell in love with our signature slices and it’s something that I want to share with people from all over the world. Our signature pizzas are the Pepperoni Square, Vodka Square, and the Grandma (thin crust). We hope to see you soon! Thank you!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think three things that are important who are starting out is curiosity, resilience, and continuous learning. Curiosity drives exploration, learning, and innovation. It fuels a desire to understand how things work, to ask questions, and to seek out new information. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and persevere in the face of challenges. It enables individuals to maintain focus and motivation despite obstacles or failures. In today’s rapidly evolving world, the ability to learn and adapt is essential for personal and professional growth. Continuous learning involves staying curious, acquiring new skills and knowledge, and keeping up with developments in your field.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents taught me hard work and a strong mind set was essential to be successful.
