Meet Dawood Marion

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dawood Marion. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dawood below.

Dawood , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Growing up in inner city Los Angeles exposed me to many unsavory experiences and seeing many of my friends venture dark paths fueled my resolve to succeed. I saw how bad influences affected people around me and refused to allow myself to fall victim to those traps.

I used my interest in art as a lifeline. The hours/days I spent in the house learning about art and mastering my craft kept me off the streets. Art itterally saved my life. As an artist I was so different from my many of my friends that I knew I’d never succeed at assimilating in the street life. So i gambled on my ability to draw.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have a great mentor who helped me master drawing. Drawing is my foundation for design. Through drawing I’ve been able to expand my sense of design. Drawing has led me to painting, sculpture, fashion and filmmaking.

I’m currently working on an animated project. This is the largest venture I’ve ever embarked on. I’ve completed the script and now working on the storyboards and pitch deck.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Learning and understanding more about myself. Through reading and listening to personal development books and lectures I was able to see where and how to improve my habits to bring about better results. As well I believe that learning is a skill that helps me greatly.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My mother taught me to never give up. She also showed me how to defy the odds.
