We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rev Janet Ellis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rev Janet below.
Rev Janet, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
In 2000 I walked away from the corporate world, dismal, depressed and having no idea what to do next in my life. I couldn’t take the disrespect, the lack of healthy relationships and conversations with co workers and as a woman in a definite man’s department Engineering, I would never be noticed for the quality of my work. So, I quit! I decided that I would get into some form of exercise and I went to this yoga studio one morning in January and it was closed! However, there was a list of upcoming workshops listed on a sheet at the door, the first one list: The Path; Creating mission and vision for work and life! Well I took a deep breath, said ok I get it, to who or whatever was listening to me and I called the facilitator of the workshop. I got the details, asked how much it was and thanked her for the info. She asked me if I was coming, I said no, I don’t have the finances right now. She then said, so you need a scholarship? I asked what that meant , she said just come and I did….in 3 days, my life changed! My Mission is to ignite Encourage and Amplify Authenticity in myself and others!
I do that by creating a safe place where everyone can wake up to their full potential.
My purpose, my passion, the gift I want to share with the world so they can wake up and know they too have a gift to share with the world. I was licensed and certified to facilitate this work shop and as I worked with individuals and groups, it pushed me into Life Coaching, which then pushed me to publish a book “Wake Up! Break the Generational Cycle and Be Yourself “, which was number 1 best seller! That then pushed me to take a 4 year class to become an ordained Interfaith Minister!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I started my own business in 2019, Janet’s Planets of Empowerment. For the longest time I believed that someone was going to find me out…I believe they call it the imposter syndrome today. I absolutely Love to speak everywhere and anywhere. What I mean by that is what I teach, share and facilitate would be beneficial anywhere. Sunday service, businesses, mentoring teens, Kiwanis club, rotary club, etc. I have been blessed to travel to Ottawa Canada and stay for 6 weeks to speak at 2 churches and to facilitate a 12 week work shop I do. I have had the opportunity to travel to Thailand for 6 weeks in The Mountains of Chan Mai to meditate with Buddhist monks from early morning to late into the evening so I could learn as much as I could of their practice and beliefs. I have had the opportunity to go on a number of cruises and speak to those that gather from all over the world to attend a conference called Positive Chrisitianity. I love learning about others and what helps them to wake up to their Authenticity and then we can go out into the world to practice and put our gifts into action so we can help change the world, one person at a time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first quality for me is trusting my intuition. I listen to it always and feel what is right for me, that takes awareness and a lot of practice achieving it. My second quality would be my ability to stand in front of one person or millions and trust that what I have to say is of importance, wakes people up and helps them to take the steps they need to take to honor themselves and work on themselves, not just for them, for everyone they come in contact with.
My third quality is taking the trauma that I experienced in childhood and learning from it in a way I can help others to be willing to do the work it takes to break through the pain so they won’t have to go through what I did, having no resentment, turning it into good, not anger or anguish.
I suggest they find someone they feel very safe with, trust their process and work on themselves, the rest will come.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I would share what knowledge and wisdom I have with anyone at any age that has the desire and willingness to do what it takes to do the work that needs to be done to help them truly become themselves and Authentic! Speaking engagements, I LOVE to share what I have learned, especially in a way of story telling! Sharing with others brings an energy and connection like nothing else I have experienced, other than singing!
I know I am good at what I do, I have proven it over and over again, it is just knowing how to be Authentic, totally real in sharing my passion and being able to sell myself to others.
