We were lucky to catch up with Jesus Maldonado recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jesus, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
The journey to finding my purpose with creating Browntears has been deeply personal and transformative. Growing up in South Central, Los Angeles with immigrant parents in the United States, I witnessed firsthand the challenges and struggles faced by my community. Through Browntears, I found a platform to shed light on these experiences, to amplify the voices of immigrants, and to advocate for change. More than just a clothing brand, Browntears is a celebration of resilience, embracing the richness of our skin color and culture. It’s about empowering individuals to feel proud of their heritage and to stand tall in the face of adversity. With every design, we aim to spark conversations, foster empathy, and unite people from all walks of life. Browntears is not just a brand; it’s a movement towards greater understanding, acceptance, and unity.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In late 2019, I embarked on a journey to launch Browntears, a clothing brand with a profound purpose. Motivated by the desire to shed light on the often-overlooked struggles of immigrants in America, Browntears was born with a mission to raise awareness and foster acceptance. Through our designs, we aim to empower individuals to embrace their skin color and cultural heritage proudly. As we gear up for upcoming drops, I am filled with excitement for the opportunity to continue spreading our message and sparking meaningful conversations.
In the future I would like to launch a non profit organization called “The Browntears Foundation”. As a non-profit organization, we would be dedicated to providing immigration services to children aged 18 and under, ensuring that they have the support and resources they need to navigate complex legal processes. Additionally, through the Browntears Foundation, we would be committed to giving back to our community, furthering our mission of unity and compassion. Together, we strive to make a positive impact and create a more inclusive society for all.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my journey as a clothing brand founder, three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge have been particularly impactful. Firstly, creativity has played a pivotal role, allowing me to conceptualize unique designs that resonate with our audience and effectively convey the message behind Browntears. This creative vision has fueled our brand’s identity and differentiation in a crowded market. Secondly, adaptability has been crucial in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the fashion industry, from staying ahead of trends to pivoting strategies in response to unforeseen challenges. Flexibility and a willingness to embrace change have enabled Browntears to thrive and grow. Finally, community engagement and understanding consumer needs have been essential. Building genuine connections with our audience, listening to their feedback, and incorporating their voices into our brand’s ethos have fostered a sense of belonging and loyalty among our supporters. All I could say is to do something that you’re passionate about and everything else will fall in place.
