Meet Kate Baker

We recently connected with Kate Baker and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kate, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
In my early adult life, I stumbled upon a passion that would shape my future in profound ways – interior design. It all started as a casual interest in re-arranging furniture with my mom, then it evolved into a deep-seated calling that I couldn’t ignore. I realized that this craft was not only about creating visually appealing spaces but also crafting experience, provoking emotion, and telling stories through design. This realization sparked a fire within me and propelled me forward.

I am always embracing the opportunity to learn, grow, and evolve as a designer. From mastering the principles of design to staying on top of the latest trends and innovations, I seized every chance to expand my horizons and push my boundaries. Through this journey of self-discovery and exploration, I underwent a transformation, not just in terms of my skills and expertise, but also in my perspective towards design and life. I gained a deeper understanding of the impact that thoughtful design can have on individuals and communities on a deep level.

As I continue to navigate this dynamic and ever-evolving field, I am excited by the prospect of the changes and growth that lie ahead. I am committed to staying curious, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and embracing new challenges that will shape me into a more skilled, empathetic, and visionary interior decorator. Interior decorating is not just a career for me; it is my purpose – a calling that has the power to transform spaces, uplift spirits, and enrich lives. And I am determined to harness this calling to create spaces that inspire, delight, and touch the hearts of all who inhabit them. “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” -Marc Anthony

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Growing up, my mom would always re-design rooms in her home, and I absolutely loved helping out. The older I got, the more I knew I wanted to make a career out of this pass time hobby. I’ve had two jobs now, both associated with the interior design career path. My first job was at Neat Method – Dallas Highland Park, as a professional organizer and social media manager. I loved decorating and capturing the inside of all spaces including pantries, closets, drawers, and more. You name it, I have organized and posted it! But I was called to pursue a new challenge, because I wanted to take my design skills a step further. I am now an associate interior designer at Abigail Doty Design. I am always looking for more opportunities to learn and grow with my team, We have some exciting things coming up, so stay tuned!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Throughout my interior design and professional organizing journey, I gained valuable qualities, skills, and knowledge that carry my success in these fields:

Attention to Detail

One of the crucial qualities I developed is a keen eye for every detail. In interior design, every element, from the placement of furniture to the selection of colors, plays a vital role in creating harmonious and functional spaces. By paying close attention to even the smallest details, like steaming the sheets, I can ensure that every aspect of a design or organizational plan is meticulously planned and executed to perfection. A good way to become better at this is to scan the room over and over to make sure there is nothing out of place.

Spatial Awareness

A keen sense of spatial awareness is another skill that I have cultivated over the course of my career. Understanding how to optimize and make the best use of space is essential in both interior design and professional organizing. By visualizing and conceptualizing how different elements will interact within a given space, I can create layouts and arrangements that are not only visually appealing but also highly efficient and practical. This just takes years of practice, the more you do it the better you will become. You will begin to understand exactly what a space needs just by looking at it.

Client Communication

Effective client communication is key to the success of any interior design or professional organizing project. Throughout my journey, I have learned the importance of active listening, clear articulation of ideas, and fostering open dialogue with clients to understand their preferences, needs, and vision for their space. By building strong client relationships based on trust and collaboration, I am able to deliver results that not only meet but exceed their expectations. When I first started communication on a professional level, I developed phrases that helped me become better at listening instead of figuring out what to say next. Things like ‘Absolutely’, or ‘Of course’, will help the conversation flow naturally, while still ensuring that you understood what the client is wanting.

In sum, the journey of interior design and professional organizing has equipped me with invaluable and knowledge that continues to shape my path when creating inspiring and functional spaces for clients. Always be aware and open to new challenges that get thrown your way.
