Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mercedes Douglas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Mercedes, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
The number one way I develop my self-esteem and confidence is by going to the gym consistently and watching my nutrition. I have noticed that when I look better I usually feel better about myself inside and out. I also like to write in my journal and leave encouraging notes sitting around. From time to time I like to write positive affirmations on sticky notes and stick them to a mirror I use so I can see them everyday.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hey ya’ll! I am Mercedes Douglas owner/creator of Mercedes Raquel Artistry. I am based in Cypress, Tx but was born and raised in Houston, Tx. ​
Beauty has always been a part of my life! As a little girl I loved playing with my barbies a lot. I would always take them to the “beauty salon” and give them the works! My mom and sister were also huge influences for me. My mom always looked polished and put together. She would not leave the house without her hair and makeup done. Same for my sister! She kept her hair and makeup done and always kept up with the hottest fashion trends. She used me as her barbie quite often; doing my hair and as I got older doing my makeup. And she also like taking pictured after she dolled me up. So it was almost inevitable that I went down this path

I attended Paul Mitchell The School Houston in 2016 and graduated in 2017 and I have 7 years of experience as a makeup artist. I am very passionate about what I do and view makeup as art. I aim to make every client feel beautiful on the inside and out. It’s important to feel confident on the inside before we can truly appreciate ourselves physically.

Very soon I will be launching my beauty academy virtually and in person. And I will also be relaunching my product line so be on the look out for those!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say the three qualities that kept me going were perseverance, determination, and then my faith. Even though I had plenty of moments where I wanted to give up, I never did. I knew I had to keep going because of the goals that I want to reach. The lives I wanted to impact. The people I want to help impact. I can’t leave them hanging, not now, ever. My determination to become the best person I can be helped as well. I had to learn to separate my personal feelings from my business. Honestly that is what caused me to stall out those time when I felt like giving it all up. My faith is the glue that hold it all together. I have faith that no matter what I go through or how im feeling on my journey, I know that God will constantly remind me of my WHY. My advice for anyone at the beginning of their journey is to remember your WHY. If you know why you are doing what you’re doing then you will always be able to keep the momentum going. You have a purpose. Also keep your feelings separate from your business.The way you personally feel and how you see things may not be best for your business. Everyone who has a business had to learn that we cater to what our audience needs/wants. What we like and prefer and our opinion on what we think the consumers need may not be what they are looking for at all. There is a fine line
