Meet Tyler Goliday

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Goliday a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tyler, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I am big distancing myself from people. I really like my solitude and I think most of the time people conform to what the people they are around are doing thats not even apart of their own interest or purpose and fall into highlights people post of themselves on social media. The best way I overcome it is just ghosting the world and staying myself and a genuine circle of friends.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an artist from Starkville, Mississippi-based artist who primarily works with acrylic paint. I am also a current student at Jackson State University pursuing a degree in graphic design. Most of my work has been these large and enigmatic portraits and paintings that draw inspiration from childhood and a range of life experiences. Painted in grisaille, the figures portrayed take up much of the composition in a way that asserts their presence and power. The portraits are often framed against vibrantly colored or patterned backgrounds to further place emphasis on the subject depicted.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I definitely can say being resilient, patient, and optimistic are three qualities I think I have as a self-taught artist. Almost everything I do is just trial and error. These qualities are something I know contain within myself because it has been tough at times when do not have anyone around to turn to like a mentor or anything that you could ask questions or get insights on creative thoughts or just get business advice. None of that has stopped my journey or made it any less unique. My perspective of it has just been positive of it all even if it takes me longer to reach a goal. I know that from mistakes I can be able to inspire someone else and maybe be a mentor to them.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I have stepped out of my comfort zone and moved away from my hometown. Moving to Jackson has been nothing short of a blessing. I have done many art shows with also having my work displayed in the Mississippi Museum of Art. I also at my school I feel like I am helping to grow the art program to be more recognized with the university being mainly known for the engineering program. The growth I have made as an entrepreneur, artist, and person has improved tremendously. I think this just the beginning of my true journey as an artist.
