We recently connected with Patty Kappmeyer and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Patty, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
It seems like I derive my resilience from my curiosity and passion for birds and photography. My willingness to ask questions, seek answers, and continuously learn and adapt to new information shows a deep commitment to my craft and a determination to overcome challenges in pursuit of my goals. Additionally, my focus on providing valuable resources and services to others in the birding and photography community reflects a sense of purpose and dedication that likely fuels my resilience.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Absolutely! I’m deeply passionate about birding and photography, and I’ve dedicated myself to sharing that passion with others through new business Lowcountry Birds and Nature. What I do revolves around providing resources and services that enhance the birding and photography experiences of beginners and enthusiasts, particularly in the Lowcountry area around Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
What’s most exciting to me about this work is the opportunity to connect people with the beauty of nature and the fascinating world of birds. Whether it’s through my digital guides, personalized tours, or speaking engagements, I love seeing the joy and wonder that birdwatching and photography can bring to people’s lives and at the same, educate them about protecting habitats and conservation.
As for anything new, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my latest endeavor, the ebook ‘Flight Through the Seasons: Discover Birding and Photography in the Lowcountry of Hilton Head Island.’ It’s a comprehensive guide that I’ve poured my heart and soul into, offering invaluable insights and tips for anyone looking to explore the natural wonders of this stunning region.
In addition, I’m constantly seeking ways to expand and improve my offerings, so I’m always on the lookout for exciting new opportunities to engage with fellow birding and photography enthusiasts. Whether it’s through new events, product launches, or other initiatives, I’m committed to providing the best possible experience for my audience.”
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as particularly impactful:
Passion and Persistence: Without a doubt, my unwavering passion for birding and photography has been the driving force behind my journey. This passion has fueled my determination to overcome challenges and setbacks, keeping me focused on my goals even when the path ahead seemed daunting. Alongside passion, persistence has been crucial. The journey to success is rarely straightforward, and there have been times when it would have been easy to give up. However, my commitment to my craft and my vision has kept me pushing forward, even in the face of adversity.
Expertise and Continuous Learning: Building expertise in birding and photography has been instrumental in my journey. Through years of dedicated study, practice, and hands-on experience, I’ve honed my skills and developed a deep understanding of the subjects I’m passionate about. However, I’ve also recognized the importance of continuous learning. The field of birding and photography is constantly evolving, with new techniques, technologies, and discoveries emerging all the time. By staying curious and open-minded, and by actively seeking out opportunities for growth and development, I’ve been able to stay at the forefront of my field and continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
Connection and Community: Finally, the relationships I’ve built and the sense of community I’ve found within the birding and photography world have been invaluable. Whether it’s connecting with fellow enthusiasts, collaborating with experts, or learning from mentors, the support and camaraderie of others have been a source of inspiration and encouragement. Building and nurturing these connections has not only enriched my personal journey but has also opened up new opportunities and possibilities that I may not have discovered on my own.
For those who are early in their journey, my advice would be to focus on developing and nurturing these three qualities:
Cultivate Your Passion: Find what truly excites and motivates you, and let that passion drive you forward. Remember that passion alone won’t guarantee success, but it will sustain you through the inevitable challenges and obstacles you’ll encounter along the way.
Embrace Lifelong Learning: Never stop seeking out new knowledge and skills. Be curious, ask questions, and always be open to new ideas and perspectives. The more you learn, the more you’ll grow, both personally and professionally.
Build Your Network: Surround yourself with supportive and like-minded individuals who share your interests and goals. Seek out mentors and collaborators who can offer guidance and support, and don’t be afraid to reach out and make connections within your community.
By focusing on these qualities and embracing these principles, I believe that anyone can chart a course for success in their own journey, no matter where they’re starting from
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely, collaboration is a key aspect of building and growing my new business. I’m always open to partnering with individuals or organizations who share a passion for birding, photography, and nature conservation. Specifically, I’m interested in collaborating with:
Local Conservation Groups: I’m eager to work with organizations dedicated to protecting and preserving the natural habitats of birds and other wildlife in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Whether it’s through joint educational initiatives, conservation projects, or fundraising efforts, I believe that partnering with local conservation groups can amplify our impact and make a real difference for the environment.
Tourism and Hospitality Partners: As someone who offers resources and services to enhance birding and photography experiences for tourists and visitors to Hilton Head Island, I see great potential for collaboration with hotels, resorts, tour operators, and other tourism-related businesses. By joining forces, we can create unique and memorable experiences for travelers while promoting ecotourism and environmental stewardship.
Educators and Community Leaders: I’m interested in collaborating with educators, nature enthusiasts, and community leaders to promote environmental education and awareness. Whether it’s through workshops, seminars, or outreach programs, I believe that by working together, we can inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world around them.
If you’re reading this and share a passion for birds, photography, and conservation, and you’re interested in collaborating, I’d love to hear from you! You can connect with me through my website, social media channels, or by reaching out via email. Let’s join forces to make a positive impact and create meaningful experiences for birding and nature enthusiasts in the Lowcountry.”
