We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Edwin Vasquez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Edwin below.
Hi Edwin, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my ethical framework from a combination of factors. I was borne in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala where my mother thought me personal values, cultural influences. I was educated in Guatemala and I believe ethics come from personal experiences and insights and specially from my mentors that shape how I perceive and approach ethical decision and my behavior.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a multidisciplinary artist. I am serving as a Art Commissioner for the City of Palmdale. Currently I am working on a project entitled #thejoshuatreechronicles. The Joshua Tree stands as an iconic symbol of endurance in the arid landscape of the southwestern United States. His distinctive silhouette embodies the essence of strength and determination, weathering the harsh desert conditions for centuries. Yet, the very forces that shaped its resilience now pose grave challenges to its existence.
My multidisciplinary series focuses on the profound significance of the Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia). While the Joshua Tree Chronicles initially evokes the idea of a written or textual account, the term can also be expanded to encompass visual representations and multimedia documentation. Through a fusion of photography, mixed media, recycled materials, digital art, AI-generated images, poems, and video, I aim to show this tree in a way for the viewers to see this plant in a different way and perhaps pay attention to the problems it faces in the Antelope Valley.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I am bilingual, (English-Spanish) this skill allows me to communicate with a large audience from around the world. I have computer skills that allows me to navigate with ease in modern times. I love to incorporate Ai to my art practice.
I am an avid reader.
I would suggest them to learn another language, now days is easy to do it using your phone. Speaking another language has many benefits and career advantages.
Read for pleasure, read books or listen to books. There are many genres and topics that will expand your world view.
Technology used effectively and responsibly gives you endless opportunities that could easily make your grow personal and professional.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My mother made the difficult decision to send me, the oldest of three siblings, to the United States when I was young. As an artist, I had dreamed of studying art in France. However, Guatemala was in the midst of a 45-year-long internal war, and my mother knew that if I stayed, I wouldn’t survive.
I always speak out about the social and political issues affecting my community. During that time, anyone with a voice was silenced, regardless of their profession.
