We recently connected with Nubia Emmon and have shared our conversation below.
Nubia, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
For me, when I get writers block it’s simple, I get up and get out. A change of scenery helps, becoming active, getting brain food always helps. I have to remind myself ‘Don’t force it, you will get yourself frustrated’. Typically when I step away for two or three hours, sometimes a day, I can find my way back into the groove and moving seamlessly once again.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello to all you lovely readers out there. My name is Nubia Emmon, artist, singer, songwriter and rapper straight from Austin, Tx. When you hear me and my music you think of 90’s R&B and Hip Hop when it fell in love. I’ve performed all throughout Texas and various states, with my band as well. You can’t be from the Live Music Capital of the world and not perform with a band, I love it. Right now I am working on my very first Album due to be released this fall. Also, my foundation “The Nubia Emmon Foundation” will be putting on “Pretty Girls Rock The Mic for Breast Cancer Awareness” the first Saturday of November 2024. I started this back in 2012 when my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I wanted to bring awareness to our community and bring music, which is healing to the soul, together in a shared space and inform our communities…young, old, black, brown and white.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say my big three would be 1. knowing your/the business, 2. Taking constructive criticism and 3. Marketing and Branding.
Knowing your/the business is important. The ins and outs when it comes to doing business in music and handling your own music. People early on can make a lot of mistakes and get taken advantage. Having the right kind of people in your corner and in your ear helps. Keep yourself involved in YOU and in YOUR business always.
Taking constructive criticism is only going to help in the long run. I think about it this way ‘ it was good but it can always be better’. Especially with the right people in your corner they only want you to win. You have to managble, you have to listen to understand and if necessary make the change to put you in a better position.
Marketing and Branding is super important. It’s has to be believable, authentic and YOU.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed I shut everything down. Not myself but anything I feel that’s contributing to that overwhelming feeling. I get outside and get in tune with Mother Nature. Let the sun hit my skin. Go ride my bike, hike, work out. I get active. Sweating and moving around, for me helps release any anxiety, stress or overwhelming feeling. I shake it off and I’m back to my calm state. The best advice, get out and touch some grass, breathe some fresh air, meditate. It helps.
