Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth Tretter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic was learned from my parents who taught me that in order to be the best, I have to work harder than the best person I knew. So I did.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. Earlier this year, after 19 years, I decided to leave my corporate career to develop my fitness career and my personal brand. I now spend most of my time teaching group fitness classes, training private clients and planning fitness retreats. For more information follow me on Instagram at @sweatalittleglitter.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
- It is never about you, it is about THEM. How you treat people is everything and means everything to them. One of my favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou, “At the end of the day people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”
- You are the brand. Whether you work for a large brand or you are a small business owner–look the part. Dress for the job you want, not the one you have. You will never get a second chance to make a first impression.
- Be honest. Be on time. Be fair. People appreciate honesty, fairness and punctuality more than you know.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They brought me to the United States from Ukraine in 1995 when I was 17 years old. They gave me a chance for a better life. One thing my parents taught me is to not take anything for granted. Appreciate everything, regret nothing. They taught me that hard work matters and that one thing that no one can take away from you is your knowledge. They taught me the value of higher education. And most importantly they taught me how to love and how to show love. I grew up watching them work hard, they showed a lot of love, they were very successful but very humble at the same time. I live and raise my kids by the same virtues. Last, I don’t believe in having regrets, only lessons learned.
