Meet Georgia McClintock

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Georgia McClintock a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Georgia, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
My confidence and understanding, of who I am, has led me to become an effective and successful leader. Besides being the owner of the Sophya D Network, LLC and Sophya D Radio, LLC, I am a Career Advisor for the Office of Career Management at the University of South Carolina Upstate. I am passionate about my job and guding our students through their first career journey.

I am closely connected to my tech-centric students. They are, of course, introverted students. My introverted students do not trust a lost of people. At times, people do not understand introverts. I am here to tell you, I understand my introverted students. I take the time to understand why they enjoy Marvel, DC, Anime, and all the tech gadgets that exist. I am their tech advocate in our local community. Yes, I am a black woman that represents information technology. August of 2023, I earned my Master of Science in Informatics degree. I have been the only black woman at the table and in meetings advocating for my students.

My professionalism guides my confidence into my business and higher education. In a digital age where technology reigns supreme, I make sure that my voice is not overlooked. My unwavering confidence has been instrumental in overcoming challenges as a business owner and professional, I am carving a niche for me in a predominantly male-dominated field.

My goal is to break barriers but also advocate for my tech-centric students. I am a black women in tech, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for growth and innovation. Through my leadership and dedication, I exemplify the transformative power of confidence, advocacy, and representation in tech and as an independent entertainer.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The Sophya D Network, LLC and the Sophya D Radio, LLC will celebrate it’s 14th business anniversay on June 28th. I am so excited about this anniversary celebration. I scaled back in the number of interviews I coordinate. This additional has allowed me to focus on the Sophya D expansion. I have five models that I work with to develop stories about being bold and being confidenct. This project has allowed become an international published photographer and gives great exposure to the Upstate of South Carolina. One of my students and soon to be model, Carly Driver, recently won the Spartan Rec Pageant.

On the Sophya D Radio show, I want our audience to see the bold and confident host I am, but also, the guest I am interviewing. I have always believe that confidence connects people to stay engaged. My confidence captivates the attention of the group, sparking engaging conversations and forging meaningful connections. Despite initial reservations, others are drawn to my self-assured demeanor, eager to learn from my unique perspective and experiences. In this moment, confidence becomes the catalyst for fostering authentic connections and driving positive change.

My husband and business partner, Antonio McClintock (TS Creations), has been my advisor and biggest supporter for any changes to help improve the business.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Confidence and Communication skills: As a radio entertainer and tech advocate for USC Upstate, confidence and effective communication skills were paramount in engaging and inspiring my audience. Whether I was hosting a show, conducting interviews with tech experts, or speaking at campus events, the ability to express ideas clearly and confidently helped me connect with listeners and convey the importance of technology in education and beyond.

Technical Proficiency: A deep understanding of technology and its applications was essential in my role as a tech advocate. By staying up-to-date with the latest trends, advancements, and emerging technologies, I am able to provide valuable insights and recommendations to students, faculty, and the community. This technical proficiency not only bolstered my credibility but also enabled me to effectively advocate for the integration of technology into various aspects of students career goals.

Passion for Education and Empowerment: One of the most impactful qualities in my journey was my passion for education and empowerment. I firmly believed in the transformative power of technology to enhance learning experiences, bridge gaps, and empower individuals from all backgrounds. This passion drove me to actively seek out opportunities to promote tech literacy, diversity, and inclusion on campus, inspiring others to embrace technology as a tool for personal and professional growth.

These three qualities—confidence and communication skills, technical proficiency, and a passion for education and empowerment—formed the foundation of my journey as a radio entertainer and tech advocate for USC Upstate, enabling me to make a meaningful impact on the campus community and the local community.

My advice for people in their early journey on how they can best develop or improve on these skills are to:
Practice Regularly: Confidence and communication skills are like muscles that need regular exercise to strengthen. Practice speaking in public, whether it’s in front of a mirror, with friends or family, or in low-pressure settings like clubs or organizations. Joining a public speaking club or taking communication courses can also provide structured practice and valuable feedback.

Seek Feedback: Actively seek feedback from others on your communication style, presentation skills, and areas for improvement. Constructive criticism can help you identify blind spots and refine your approach. Be open to feedback and use it as an opportunity for growth.

Continuous Learning: Stay curious and committed to continuous learning, especially in the field of technology. Take advantage of online courses, workshops, seminars, and educational resources to expand your knowledge and stay updated on industry trends. Hands-on experience through internships, projects, or volunteering can also deepen your technical expertise.

Find Your Passion: Explore different areas within your field of interest to discover what truly excites and motivates you. Cultivate a genuine passion for your work by connecting it to your personal values, interests, and long-term goals. When you’re passionate about what you do, it naturally fuels your drive to learn, improve, and make a difference.

Embrace Challenges: Don’t shy away from challenges or setbacks; instead, view them as opportunities for growth and resilience. Push yourself outside your comfort zone, take on new responsibilities, and tackle complex problems. Embracing challenges builds confidence, strengthens your skills, and fosters adaptability in the face of adversity.

Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and role models who can provide guidance, encouragement, and support along your journey. Network with professionals in your field, attend industry events, and join communities or forums where you can exchange ideas, learn from others, and seek advice.

By incorporating these strategies into your journey, you can gradually develop and enhance essential qualities like confidence, communication skills, technical proficiency, and passion, setting a solid foundation for success in your chosen endeavors. Remember that growth takes time and patience, so stay committed to your goals and keep moving forward with determination and perseverance.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
While it’s tempting to go all-in on our strengths, becoming more well-rounded offers a broader skill set and greater versatility. In today’s dynamic and competitive world, adaptability is crucial. By honing a diverse range of skills, we’re better equipped to navigate various challenges and seize new opportunities that may arise.

Moreover, addressing weaknesses can lead to personal growth and development. It’s through confronting and overcoming our limitations that we truly expand our capabilities and reach our full potential. This process may require patience, as improvement often takes time and consistent effort.

I recall a personal experience that highlights the importance of striving for well-roundedness. As a radio entertainer, I get very excited about planning the guest line-up for the following year. Sometimes in my excitement, I overlook things, double book interviews, or rush. When I rush, the quality is not good. Recognizing this, I made a conscious effort to improve my communication and collaboration skills. It was not easy, and progress was slow at times, but with dedication and patience, I gradually saw improvement.

As I developed a more balanced skill set, I became a more effective team member and leader. My increased ability to communicate and collaborate not only enhanced my professional relationships, but also opened doors to new opportunities and career advancement.

Ultimately, while it’s essential to leverage our strengths, investing in areas of improvement can lead to greater overall growth and success in the long run. It’s about striking a balance between building on what we’re already good at and challenging ourselves to become more well-rounded individuals. And through patience and perseverance, we can continue to evolve and thrive in both our personal and professional lives.
