We caught up with the brilliant and insightful King Kira a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
King, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I’ve always had a sense of what my purpose was here in this lifetime. since a little girl I imagined and day dreamed about being someone important in the world; someone that not only inspires through my skills and talents but also by my kindness and love. They say your purpose is found in your passions and through the things that interest you the most and most of the time we know what that passion is but we get clouded by the 9-5 life style or the judgement of others; for me it was and still is music, acting and modeling. Since Elemtary I was always in choir and drama classes, it was my number 1 choices for my extracurricular activity up until high school and of course like every great musician, i sang in the church choir. I started writing my own songs in middle school. I remeber being in the bleachers during gym class, excited that i had written a song the night before, singing it to my friends for the first time. Surprisingly, they loved it, we then tried to start our own all girls singing group where we would gather on the phone after school and write songs. It didnt go to far but that inflicted more excitement to keep going. Watching shows and movies on Bet, MTV, Vh1, Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nickoldeon I inspired to be like the musicians and actors i saw. Everyday after school i would watch 106 N Park, TRL and music videos and make up my own choreography, imagining i was performing on stage. Wishful thinking, I would hope that a talent agent’s car would magically breakdown in front of our house and have to come inside to use the phone, there i would suprise he or she with charm and show my talents, sing and dance then off to Hollywood i would go. Also, embarrassed as I think on it now, I would call the beauticians in the hype hair magazines and asked them if they knew or had the contact for certain celebrities so i could get in contact with them. I was an ambitious kid and detemined to find my way. When it was time for college, i chose Theater and performing arts, in which i got my degree. After graduating I contined my journey with modeling, acting in various web series, shows, and booking that agent i was hoping for and began audtioning for commercials. the most accomplishing part of this journey was writting, recording and performing my first song and later my first e.p. I have been able to work and collaborate with various amazing talented artist and creatives in the DFW area. In 2023, after an impactful heart break, i took a mental break. During this mental break I was able to hon in and reflect on what it was that i wanted to accomplish and do in life, outside of the doubt, trauma and the worries that i had at the time. I felt like i lost myself and lost sight of my vision. Not only that, I became so focused on working hard for “the man,” making their dreams prosper and watering down my aspirations and purpose. Life does not come with a manuel and the bills have to be paid, as cliche as that sounds. I feel like this is what happens to most of people; they lose sight of their purpose, get caught up into work and they give up. i did not want that to be me, i REFUSE to let that be me. One sad night after reflecting on the past year, and capturing those feeling during that time, i was able to put those feelings and thoughts into my music that i am excited to announce will be releasing in May 2024! I beleive we are all gifted with a purpose and a passion. Most of the time the purpose has always been with us naturally since adolescences we just have to take that time to reflect on what it is, focus and hon in on the vision until it manifest.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a model and actress but mostly a music artist, and a damn good one at that. In the beginning, although i am a singer at heart, i started rapping. I was somewhat afraid of my singing voice. overthinking the pressure of making sure i sounded great, being on the right key, pitch and haramony and comparing myself to other artist. i tried to stir away from singing and just rapped because it was more comfortable. Since taking a year off from my music in 2023, for mental health reasons, i was able to reflect, practice, and appreciate the beautiful skills and voice God blessed me with. During this time, i was also able to practice and write songs about my feelings, life and my heartbreak (we all know some of the best work comes from a heartbreak). i went off the social radar for a moment and focused my energy into creating something different from the music i have already put out. My mission is to be categorized as a music creative, not just a hiphop or rap artist. For this new sound of mine, I began playing with my vocals more and trying beats outside of my normal choice. Honning into more pop, jazz, house and r&b sounds instead of trap beats. I tapped more into my feminine energy, talking about my feelings and experiences more than just “popping my ish,” as some would say. Making music people can relate to, feel good about and dance and move to; I am excited to say that the music i am releasing Summer of 2024 is reflecting just that. Its different, voulnable, relatable and inspiring. its the feel good creative music perfect for the summer that people are going to love singing and dancing to. i feel like this new music is different from what people will expect from me and will define what sound i want to establish a KingKira, the music artist. My first hit single “Collide” will be release May 2024 which was inspired by a Jill Scott song that resinates with me and many others. The song is about being in love or having relations with a person who wants you but cant handle being in a relationship at the time (im pretty sure many can relate to this feeling) I cant wait to show what ive been working on during this break and excited to see how it will impact others.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three areas that were the most impactful during this journey was first taking the time to beleive in myself stepping outside of all my fears and doubts, which hinders many people. Many times we are detoured by our own thoughts and the opinions of others that we get timit when its time to execute what it is that we want to express. one of my favorite artist, Tyler The Creator,” has this saying “whatever your talent is, whatever your passion is, just do it. creation is what inspires the world and you should always be happy and bold with the things your create in this life. There are people maybe less qualified then others but its the boldness, belief and audasity that takes them further. After that realization, i have allowed myself to step out of my own way and trust and beleive in myself and the creation i have to offer to the world. i would also say practicing and taking classes because we all know practice makes perfect and lastly, that damn heart break of mine last year. it gave me so much focus, inspiration and feelings that i am able to put into my music now. its something about when a person hurts your feeling that inspires and invoke so much determination and inspiration. now that i look back, im grateful for it all
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
i think its better and important to go all in on your strengths. your strengths are what make you stand out and at times makes you different. it is also what gets you started on your journey. Many people think they must learn everything before starting, get destracted and never start. once you find that you have a strength or skill to work with, hon in on it and start the process. The skills and learning that you lack will be modified through your experiences. Of course taking classes to improve is always great but the mission is always starting and the willingness to be consistant once you start. I say this because i was that person. My strenght was writting songs and being creative but the doubt or thought that i was not well equipped in skills instilled a fear that held me back for releasing music in the past.. During the process of execution and consistency is where i learned the most and has helped my improvement. Also being around other creatives that has different strenghths has help me learn and apply
